鈥淭he music plays the band.鈥

Steve Hull, drummer for One More Silver Dollar Band, said this quote from The Grateful Dead explains not only what jam band music is, but what fans can expect from the New Mexico Jam Band Fest on Saturday, Aug. 15.

鈥淭he music instructs everything,鈥 Hull said, 鈥渁nd it takes the audience someplace, and it takes the band someplace and when it works beautifully, they all come together.鈥

Jam band music is all about community, he said, and the community and music all coming together on a beautiful sunny day at Balloon Fiesta Park would be perfect.

Jennie McDaniel, event organizer, said it will be a day filled with inclusivity, acceptance and a loving community representing hippie culture and the jam band movement.

鈥淚 was only born in 鈥78, but I've read all about it,鈥 McDaniel said. 鈥淭he movement was so impressive, so I think that it was more like a teaching tool, even than.鈥

Alongside the music, there will be several other activities to enjoy.

鈥淲e鈥檙e going to have all kinds of local vendors, artisan vendors, makers of all kinds,鈥 she said.

The vendors will be selling everything from clothing to pottery to soap and more, she said.

Hull said much of the band鈥檚 musical inspiration comes from the Allman Brothers Band. They play covers of the band, including 鈥淚n Memory of Elizabeth Reed,鈥 鈥淲hipping Post鈥 and 鈥淒reams.鈥

He said these songs all have improvisational moments while being highly structured, which fits with the band鈥檚 playing style.

鈥淭he songs that we do, some of them are tight and arranged and controlled,鈥 Hull said. 鈥淪ome of them are long and exploratory and expressive, but within a structure of an arrangement.鈥

He said the way the band plays together is very similar to jazz musicians improvising off one another, and it highlights the ethos of a jam band.

鈥淭he whole band listens to each other and if the solo instrument repeats a phrase or goes way up in intensity or brings it way down, the band responds,鈥 Hull said.

The members having similar musical traditions has helped.

鈥淚 used to say it's like being married to four other people at the same time,鈥 Hull said, 鈥渁nd the chemistry within One More Silver Dollar is really unique in my experience.鈥

鈥淲e all really respect each other as people and as musicians,鈥 he said.

McDaniel said she wants the event to represent the jam bands of the 1960s and 鈥70s and to continue to grow past the inaugural year.

鈥淚鈥檓 just hoping to get two days next year (and) that this will be successful 鈥︹ McDaniel said, 鈥渁nd we can become a hub for the Southwest for community connection, music, and art. That's my intention.鈥
