Route 66 Summerfest is celebrating 100 years of the Mother Road with music, food and more.

Bree Ortiz, city of Albuquerque com颅munity events divi颅sion man颅ager, said the July Summerfest is extra special.

鈥淭his is really the signature event for the year for Albuquerque for the centennial Route 66,鈥� Ortiz said.

Route 66 Summerfest happens annually in July and is a mile鈥檚 worth of programming in Nob Hill on Central Avenue between Girard Boulevard and Washington Street. For the centennial Ortiz said the city 鈥渢hemed it up.鈥�

Eventgoers can enjoy a musical journey through the ages as they walk down Central.

Ortiz said the focus was to showcase music from the last 100 years.

鈥淲e have four stages,鈥� Ortiz said, 鈥渁nd each stage is aged for an era.鈥�

The venues are the Main Stage presented by Legends Theater at Route 66 Casino Hotel featuring music from the 1970s to today; the Wellesley Stage featuring music from the 1960s鈥�1980s; the New Mexico Jazz Festival stage featuring music from the 1940s鈥�1950s; and the East Stage featuring music from the 1920s-1930s.

鈥淭his is all music that you know has been played as people are road tripping on Route 66,鈥� she said.

Headlining the event are the Docksiders, a yacht rock band.

Drive-in Delinquents will kick off the music on the Wellesley Stage with their rockabilly blend.

鈥�(Rockabilly is) the kind of the intersection of old rock 鈥檔鈥� roll and country,鈥� Adam Wagg, lead singer, said. 鈥淪ort of the early days of rock 鈥檔鈥� roll, where those two genres sort of overlapped.鈥�

He said the band鈥檚 early inspirations were artists like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Eddie Cochran. The band performs a mix of original songs with a 鈥�60s to 鈥�80s sound, alongside covers.

Wagg writes many of the originals, drawing inspiration from his younger years.

鈥淭hese songs are about love and parties and driving around and dancing and heartache,鈥� Wagg said.

He said what makes rockabilly so fun is that it is meant to be danced to and enjoyed. Paul Milazzo, the band鈥檚 lead guitarist, Wagg said, influenced the band鈥檚 journey into more 鈥�80s rockabilly.

鈥淲e do the song called 鈥楴ine Mile Hill,鈥� which is really, really beautiful memorial to Elvis and Route 66,鈥� Milazzo said.

Nine Mile Hill is located just out of town near 98th Street, he said, and is where Elvis Presley apparently used to stop for a cigarette on his trips from LA to Memphis, Tennessee.

Just Velvet has been together since 2022 and was formed by friends who wanted to do more with their music, said Shani Mikaela, the band鈥檚 vocalist and saxophone player.

The band will be on the Main Stage and will play more modern-day music, with a mix of pop, soul and R&B covers.

鈥淲e鈥檝e kind of been growing into that as the years have gone on,鈥� Mikaela said.

When it came to deciding what to play for the Route 66 Summerfest, she said the band wanted the tunes to feel like a road trip.

鈥淚 think they can kind of like take you on a journey,鈥� Mikaela said.

Free park-and-ride service will be available throughout the event. Parking is available in the lot on the southwest corner of Lomas and University boulevards, with buses dropping eventgoers off at the University of New Mexico鈥檚 Johnson Field.
