A U.S. citizen was caught trying to smuggle a large amount of methamphetamine across the border in his buttocks last weekend at an El Paso checkpoint.
Roger Maier, a spokesperson for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, said the 26-year-old was arrested and turned over to Homeland Security Investigations to face charges for importing a controlled substance.
The suspect鈥檚 name was not released.
鈥淭he keen observational skills of a CBP officer resulted in this seizure being made,鈥 CBP Ysleta Port Director Arnie Gomez said in a release. 鈥淏ody carriers are a challenge, however our mix of officer expertise, canine support, and tools and technology all assist us in identifying and stopping these types of smuggling attempts.鈥
Maier said around 4 a.m. Sunday, the man 鈥渁rrived as a pedestrian from Mexico鈥 at the Ysleta Port of Entry. A CBP officer 鈥渟elected the man for a secondary exam following a short interview.鈥
A drug-sniffing dog searched the man and 鈥減rovided a positive alert鈥 to the smell of narcotics, he said. A CBP officer performed a pat-down and found two packages 鈥渃oncealed between the man鈥檚 buttocks.鈥
Maier said the packages held a third of a pound of methamphetamine.
