New Mexico State University has named a new provost and vice president for academic affairs, ending years of turnover and interim leadership at the college.

Joseph Bull, the current dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science at Portland State University, will step into the role pending approval from 近距离内射合集鈥檚 Board of Regents, the university announced Wednesday.

Joseph Bull, current dean of the College of Engineering at Portland State University, has been named New Mexico State University's new provost and vice president for academic affairs.

鈥淒r. Bull is exactly the kind of leader this moment calls for,鈥 said 近距离内射合集 President Valerio Ferme in a statement. 鈥淗e brings a depth of experience, a collaborative spirit and a set of values that I believe will make him a transformative partner in the work ahead.鈥

Bull will replace interim Provost Lakshmi Reddi, dean of the 近距离内射合集 College of Engineering, who filled the position after former Provost Alan Shoho resigned in March 2024 after less than a year in the role.

Shoho took the reins after the termination of former provost and chief academic officer Carol Parker in 2022. Parker filed a lawsuit against the university after leaving, alleging leadership had retaliated against her. She was awarded a $445,000 settlement in 2024, according to the .

Ferme is another recent hire of the university 鈥 he became president of 近距离内射合集 in January 2025, following the exit of Dan Arvizu in April 2023 after regents voted to seek new leadership amid turmoil and a faculty no-confidence vote, lawsuits from former administrators, a hazing and sexual assault scandal involving the men鈥檚 basketball team and other headwinds.

Bull鈥檚 salary has not yet been finalized, according to 近距离内射合集 spokesperson Minerva Baumann, though his predecessor Reddi earns $374,920 as interim provost.

Bull has served at Portland State since 2022, according to an 近距离内射合集 news release. He is a member of the Delaware Tribe of Indians, making him the first and only Native American dean of engineering in the country, university officials said.

He is a first-generation college graduate and has received awards for his work in diversity in higher education and science.

Bull鈥檚 personal experience and values 鈥渁lign powerfully with 近距离内射合集鈥檚 identity as a Hispanic-serving institution and a land-grant university with a proud tradition of serving students and communities from all corners of the state,鈥 Ferme said.

Bull鈥檚 research has focused on ultrasound and biofluid mechanics, cancer treatment via gas microbubbles and acoustic droplet vaporization. Prior to Portland State, he served at Tulane University in New Orleans and the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

He was selected following a national search led by Patricia Sullivan, interim vice president for research, creativity and economic development, and Christopher Brown, professor of geography and environmental studies and vice chair of the Faculty Senate.
