Police released the name of a man who reportedly fired dozens of rounds inside his apartment before being shot and killed by two officers Tuesday during a lengthy standoff in Northwest Albuquerque.

The Albuquerque Police Department on Thursday identified the man as 39-year-old Sean Omara. The shooting happened at a West Side apartment complex after residents called 911 to report that Omara was firing guns inside his apartment.

Officers were dispatched around 2:30 a.m. to the Odyssey Apartments at 10600 Cibola Loop NW after Omara called to report that he believed homeless people were attempting to break into his apartment.

Omara called at least twice throughout the day to report that someone was attempting to tamper with his locks. Police were eventually dispatched a third time after residents called 911, APD Chief Cecily Barker said during a Tuesday evening news conference.

SWAT officers arrived on scene and a crisis negotiator attempted to coax Omara out of the apartment, though police say he refused to cooperate, according to APD spokesperson Gilbert Gallegos.

鈥淪hortly after 6 p.m., Omara exited the apartment, onto the patio, with a rifle in his hand,鈥� Gallegos said. 鈥淭wo SWAT officers fired their rifles, striking Omara.鈥�

Omara died at the scene, he said. Gallegos did not say how many times the officers fired their weapons.

The incident marked the eighth police shooting in 2026. Six of those were fatal.

Officers later searched the apartment and found 122 spent bullet casings inside, according to Gallegos.

At least one of those bullets struck and damaged a water pipe that caused neighboring apartments to flood. One resident told the Journal that the carpet of her bedroom and closet had been soaked with water.
