Summer has been all about togetherness for the University of New Mexico women's basketball team.

September will be more about separation.

First-year coach Amy Eagan and her Lobos tipped off fall workouts last week at the Davalos Center as the squad began ramping up for the 2026-27 season. The workout schedule is limited to eight hours of combined conditioning and on-court work per week until Sept. 22, when teams can begin full regular-season preparations.

With a new coaching staff, 10 first-year Lobos and five returnees, Eagan has emphasized bonding while UNM's players adapt to a new routine and a dramatically different Princeton-based offense. As a result, no individual roles have yet been determined.

"All five starting spots are still available," Eagan said this week. "I think most of our players are still overthinking things a little bit, so we haven't really started making those decisions yet. But we are going to need some separation at some point. Part of that will be seeing who's retaining what we've been teaching. Part of it will be leaders stepping up."

Three players — forward Gracie Kelsey and guards Valerie Norwood and Gracy Wernli — have an edge in terms of knowing Eagan's system. All three played for her at Lindenwood before transferring to UNM when Eagan was hired in March.

But Wernli has been rehabbing from ACL surgery and Eagan has made a point to try numerous player combinations during the scrimmage portions of workouts, looking for cohesiveness and chemistry.

"It's coming together," Eagan said. "There were a lot of ups and downs in the summer — which is expected when you basically have a whole new team. But we had a really, really good first week to start the fall. Things are starting to click for a lot of these players. We need to keep building from here."

GETTING CLOSER: Wernli, who sat out most of UNM's summer drills, has begun doing half-court work and shooting drills. She is expected to start full-contact participation soon, Eagan said.

"She's close," Eagan said. "We're just being really cautious with her. She already knows the system, so we can afford to be."

Wernli, a fourth-year senior, was a full-time starter for two seasons at Lindenwood, averaging 9.5 points and hitting 65 3-pointers (hitting 35.1%) in 47 games. Wernli played 14 games last season prior to her injury. She played at Abilene Christian as a freshman.

SCHEDULE DELAYS: Several Mountain West women's programs have released their non-conference basketball schedules, but UNM is not among them. The schedule is complete, but UNM has yet to receive signed contracts from two of its opponents, Eagan said.

"As soon as we have all the contracts, we'll release it," she said.

Eagan confirmed that UNM will host Eastern Kentucky (25-9 last season) as part of an 11-game non-conference slate, which includes nine home games and road trips to BYU and Fresno State. The Lobos are also set to host Seattle, New Mexico State, New Mexico Highlands, Loyola Marymount, Portland, Arizona and Colorado.

MOUNTAIN WEST TWEAKS: The MWC has not released conference basketball schedules for 2026-27, although a few men's programs including UNM have released theirs individually. Teams will play 18 conference games (home and home versus each opponent). The MWC will not release its schedules until TV broadcast times have been finalized.

The MWC has posted brackets for the 2027 conference tournament, March 7-13 at UNLV's Thomas & Mack Center. The format is similar to that of recent seasons but with 10-team brackets. The top six regular-season finishers will advance to the quarterfinals, with the Nos. 7-10 seeds meeting for play-in games.

The women's tournament begins on Sunday, March 7 with first-round games and concludes March 10. The men's tournament starts with play-in games on March 10 and concludes March 13.
