Third in their district, best in New Mexico.

That, in a nutshell, describes the 2026 Piedra Vista Panthers, who captured the Class 5A state baseball championship on Saturday night, belting No. 2 Cleveland 10-0 in five innings at Lobo Field.

鈥淲e got hot when it counted, and we finally peaked at the end,鈥� Panthers coach Jeff Kiraly said.

Piedra Vista (27-4) won its first big-school baseball title and the first for the school since it was Class 4A in 2014.

And the Panthers, seeded fourth, went out and emphatically claimed this blue trophy.

They beat Las Cruces in the quarterfinals. They knocked off No. 1 Rio Rancho on Friday in the semis.

And, as unlikely as it might have seemed, they mercy-ruled the No. 2 seed on Saturday night.

鈥淭his is awesome,鈥� senior catcher Alejandro Hernandez said. 鈥淚 don鈥檛 have the words for this moment. It鈥檚 baseball, you never know.鈥�

Hernandez was on the receiving end of a complete-game two-hitter by his slightly older twin brother Alexis, who gave up two hits to the first two Cleveland batters and then didn鈥檛 give up another.

鈥淚 feel I was going to do good today, and I did,鈥� Alexis said. He is the older twin by a minute. He and his brother transferred from Bernalillo High two seasons ago.

Piedra Vista scored three runs in the second inning, and seven more in a fifth inning that saw the Storm go through three pitchers.

At one point, the Panthers recorded seven straight hits. Alejandro Hernandez delivered an early two-run double in that outburst, followed by RBI singles by Eliyas Burton and JW Bayless. A couple of batters later, the No. 9 hitter, Cody Clugston, ripped a two-run single. At that point, it was, astonishingly, 9-0 for Piedra Vista.

The 10th run scored on a wild pitch, and then Alexis Hernandez went to the bump and quickly closed out the Storm.

鈥淚 did not see that coming, at all,鈥� Kiraly said of winning by mercy rule.

The Piedra Vista pitching was stellar all week, with Bayless beating La Cueva, then Kyle Murphy, usually a relief pitcher, shutting down Rio Rancho.

鈥淎lexis, he鈥檚 awesome,鈥� Bayless said. 鈥淗e鈥檚 one of THE best pitchers in the state. We have so much depth where we can do that.

鈥淭hat鈥檚 why we won this tournament,鈥� he continued. 鈥淚t鈥檚 because we have the best pitching and the best hitting and the best defense in the state.鈥�

Although the Panthers finished third in District 1-5A behind Rio Rancho and Cleveland, they came to Albuquerque this week as confident as anyone.

鈥淚 thought we could do this,鈥� Kiraly said. He added, 鈥淚鈥檓 so honored to coach this team. We were in a grind all year. Our district is incredible, and I have so much respect for Cleveland and Rio Rancho.鈥�

Cleveland (26-4) was the best team in Class 5A for nearly the entire regular season. The Storm went 3-3 over their final six regular-season games, but the team that started 20-0 is the one that was on display in the quarters and semifinals, as they blanked Eldorado and then routed Carlsbad on Friday.

But there was no spark on Saturday, thanks to Alexis Hernandez.

鈥淎lexis and JW have carried us all year,鈥� Kiraly said.

Alejandro Hernandez, who caught all of them 鈥� and catching his twin in the state final, he said, was indescribable 鈥� couldn鈥檛 praise them enough.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 have (any) words for how awesome they pitched,鈥� he said. 鈥淚 love catching them.鈥�

And beating their two district rivals proved to be an extra cherry for the Panthers, they all agreed.

鈥淲e just wanted to beat 鈥檈m bad,鈥� Bayless said. 鈥淪o, we did it. It was good to beat them.鈥�

Said Alejandro Hernandez, 鈥淭his is the best team I鈥檝e ever played on. This is an awesome thing.鈥�
