Maxwell announces retirement from Presbyterian

Dale Maxwell, the CEO of Presbyterian Healthcare Services who has been with the organization for 24 years, announced his retirement on Tuesday.
Maxwell will leave the company on July 31. He has been Presbyterian鈥檚 CEO since 2016.

Through their commitment to excellence, compassion for our patients and members, and respect for each other, we have accomplished extraordinary things,鈥� Maxwell said. 鈥淚 will forever remain personally devoted to Presbyterian and the people who make it great.鈥�
Presbyterian is the largest health system in the state, treating about half of the state鈥檚 patients, according to Presbyterian. It says it is the state鈥檚 largest private employer, with more than 13,000 employees.
Late last year, a proposed merger between Presbyterian and Iowa-based UnityPoint Health fell through. Maxwell, under the proposal, was going to move to Denver and be the CEO of the parent organization that would have been created under the terms of the merger.
During Maxwell鈥檚 tenure, Presbyterian built a nine-story hospital tower at Presbyterian Hospital and expanded access to care in rural communities.
Maxwell guided the organization during the COVID-19 pandemic. During that time, the state鈥檚 health systems and hospitals worked together to share resources and patients so as not to overtax one health system.

His legacy of strength, commitment and compassion have transformed how we deliver care and coverage to New Mexicans,鈥� Norm Becker, the chairman of Presbyterian Healthcare Services鈥� board of directors, said in a statement.
The board announced Tuesday that a national search will be launched to find Maxwell鈥檚 successor.
鈥淚 will support the board and the new CEO in whatever way I can to ensure a smooth transition and continued success for the communities we serve,鈥� Maxwell said.
