What steps do you believe should be taken to improve New Mexico's economic competitiveness?
New Mexico is competitive when its workers are. I'll fight for a living wage, Paid Family and Medical Leave, and an expanded Child Tax Credit. Invest in workforce training and small businesses, tie tax breaks to real jobs, and fight back when Washington cuts services our workers need.
New Mexico is the only state that does not pay its legislators a salary, though lawmakers do receive per diem payments and can qualify for a legislative pension. Do you support or oppose the proposed constitutional amendment calling for a new legislative salary tied to the median family income level?
This is for voters to decide, and I'll respect their call. If a salary opens the door for working families, teachers, veterans, and nurses to serve, that's a good thing. But I'm not running to collect a paycheck. Paid or not, I'll do the work for HD-14.
With New Mexico now the nation鈥檚 second-highest oil producing state, would you support or oppose changes to the state鈥檚 gross receipts tax and personal income tax structures? Please explain.
The oil boom should be working for New Mexico families, not out of state shareholders. I support GRT relief on essentials like groceries and utilities, a personal income tax structure that lowers the burden on working families, and a permanent Working Families Tax Credit. No more corporate giveaways.
Would you support or oppose imposing water use limits on data centers? In addition, would you generally support or oppose banning data centers in New Mexico?
I support strict water limits on data centers. I don't support a blanket ban. HD-14 runs along the Middle Rio Grande. Meta's Los Lunas facility already draws from the same aquifer our families depend on. If a data center can't operate without draining our water, it shouldn't operate here.
Amid a recent string of high-profile criminal cases involving juvenile defendants, do you support or oppose imposing stricter sentences for adolescents convicted of certain violent crimes?
Every family in HD-14 wants to feel safe. The answer isn't longer sentences, it's keeping kids out of the system to begin with. That means school-based mental health, addiction treatment, after-school programs, and real support for families. Violent offenders face consequences, but prevention is how we actually reduce crime.
Would you support or oppose a ban on selling certain types of firearms, including semiautomatic firearms and machine guns?
I support laws targeting criminal use of firearms, keeping guns out of kids' hands through safe storage, and holding manufacturers and dealers accountable when they sell to criminals. I understand the concern behind calls for broader bans, but the focus should be on the people actually causing harm.
Do you support or oppose using New Mexico鈥檚 National Guard to assist local law enforcement with issues related to public safety?
The National Guard should support public safety, not replace police work. I support using the Guard for disaster response, logistics, and crisis backup. I oppose putting soldiers on street patrols or using them for immigration enforcement. Public safety means trained officers accountable to the community, not troops in our neighborhoods.
What changes would you propose to improve New Mexico鈥檚 Children, Youth and Families Department?
What's happening at CYFD is a disgrace, and every elected official in Santa Fe owns it. Kids die in state custody. Kids who survive abuse too often become the violent offenders we read about in the headlines. I'd fight for Kevin S. compliance, caseload caps, pay, and independent oversight.
What steps should be taken to bring New Mexico into compliance with the 2018 court ruling that found New Mexico is failing to provide a sufficient education to all students?
Seven years after Yazzie/Martinez, the state is still failing at-risk kids, and Washington's cuts make it worse. I'd fully fund bilingual, special education, and early childhood programs, raise classified staff pay, invest in school-based mental health, and bring capital outlay home to HD-14 schools. This is about accountability, not excuses.
New Mexico has seen a string of devastating wildfires and floods in recent years. What policy steps, if any, should the state take to address these natural disasters?
Families burned out of Hermit's Peak are still waiting on federal claims. That's unacceptable. The state has to lead. I'd invest in forest management, watershed restoration, and flood infrastructure before the next fire, fund our emergency responders, and hold Washington accountable for the compensation it already owes New Mexicans.
Would you support or oppose a paid family and medical leave program that would require most employees and employers to pay into a state-run fund?
I support it, and I'd vote for it. No working parent should choose between a paycheck and caring for sick children, a new baby, or dying parents. Forty percent of New Mexico workers have no paid leave. A state fund with shared contributions is fair.
Have you or your business, if you are a business owner, ever been the subject of any state or federal tax liens?
No
Have you ever been arrested for, charged with, or convicted of drunken driving, any misdemeanor or any felony in New Mexico or any other state? If so, explain.
No
Have you ever been involved in a personal or business bankruptcy proceeding?
No
