After a three-year hiatus, Lagerhosen is poised to make a triumphant return in a new location.

The Ex Novo Brewing Co.-hosted event is a celebration of lager beer featuring 21 local and national breweries, German food, live music 鈥� and even a stein-holding competition. Lagerhosen debuted at Ex Novo鈥檚 Portland, Oregon, location before the festivities found their way to the Land of Enchantment.

鈥淭he first one was really small, and we really nerded out on the lagers. We had a little panel with some expert brewers talking about specific lagering techniques and so forth,鈥� Ex Novo founder Joel Gregory said.

鈥淎nd then the year after that, we closed down the street and had more of a traditional German-style beer festival. And then (we) brought it down to New Mexico in 2022. And that was a really, really great one down in Corrales.鈥�

While that New Mexico debut quickly sold out, Lagerhosen was put on hold due to a variety of circumstances for the next few years. The second edition will take place at Ex Novo鈥檚 Downtown location 1-8 p.m Saturday, Aug. 29. According to Gregory, it was an ideal opportunity for a change of scenery.

鈥淚 think Downtown is set up really well for an event like this with the outdoor space we have as well as more substantial inside space,鈥� Gregory said. 鈥淪o we have a little bit more protection from elements if that becomes a thing. And we also have the unique ability 鈥� we鈥檝e never done anything like this before in any of our places 鈥� but we鈥檝e got the ability to serve all these beers from our actual bar because we have a really large double-sided tap system.

鈥淪o instead of having a bunch of tables and then the jockey boxes where you鈥檙e pouring out of kegs through those converted ice chests, which are problematic, we鈥檒l be able to throw six bartenders at it and be able to keep the flow going really well. And those beers will be pouring perfectly.鈥�

One ticket includes eight tokens for four-ounce samples. Ticket sales will be capped at 400 attendees, and Gregory expects that the seven-hour time frame will help to distribute crowds throughout the day.

One thing that makes Lagerhosen stand out from other beer events is the national brewery presence. This includes Meanwhile Brewing (Austin, Texas), Great Notion Brewing (Oregon, Washington and California), Breakside Brewery (Portland, Oregon), Our Mutual Friend Brewing (Denver), Pinthouse Brewing (Austin, Texas), Good Word Brewing and Public House (Duluth, Georgia), Uinta Brewing Company (Salt Lake City) and North Park Beer Company (San Diego).

Ex Novo was able to add some national diversity to the lineup in part because having a full liquor license Downtown allows it to serve products from out of state. The brewery鈥檚 staff is also well connected.

鈥淲e just kind of leveraged relationships and friendships that we鈥檝e made over the years in the industry,鈥� Gregory said. 鈥淚鈥檝e got connections, obviously, with the Pacific Northwest. Several of our brewers have been in the industry for a long, long time, and we鈥檝e made friends with people like Pint House in Austin and Breakside in Portland and some of these big powerhouse breweries that don鈥檛 have any distribution here in New Mexico.鈥�

One can expect a variety of lagers to be on display at Lagerhosen, ranging from seasonals to award winners to brewery staples. Additionally, some of the breweries from out of state will be shipping extra beers 鈥� not all related to the festival 鈥� to be sold at the event, at Ex Novo locations and in some cases, for a brief retail run.

While the celebration of lagers is the primary attraction, the stein-holding contest is expected to draw its fair share of interest. Competitors will attempt to hold a full mug of beer with a straight arm for as long as they can without lowering the beer.

鈥淭hat鈥檚 probably the highest energy thing that we鈥檝e done in a festival, just the amount of people around cheering them on. And then you get the people at the end whose arms are quivering, and they鈥檝e got the resolve to not give up. It鈥檚 pretty great,鈥� Gregory said. 鈥淎nd it鈥檚 not always who you think. It鈥檚 not always the biggest and strongest that take that medal home.鈥�
