While New Mexico breweries have racked up their fair share of awards at national and international competitions recently, they didn鈥檛 have an official event to call their own until this year.

The New Mexico Brewers Guild held the inaugural New Mexico Craft Beer Awards on Aug. 21 during an industry-only ceremony at Flock of Moons Brewing. Gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded in three beer categories: amber, American and international lagers and IPA. A total of 85 entries from 19 participating breweries were evaluated by a panel of 19 judges on Aug. 6-7 in Albuquerque.

There were some very specific criteria to follow for judging.

鈥淓ach category has several sub-styles underneath it. When a beer is registered, the brewer selects which sub-style they are entering, and then that beer is judged against the standard for that sub-style. This is not a pick-your-favorite-beer competition. Entries are double-blind 鈥� similar to the IPA Challenge 鈥� so that judges and volunteers have no information about each sample, preventing skewed results,鈥� NMBG executive director Ebbie Edmonston said.

鈥淭he judges range from industry professionals to Beer Judge Certification Program accredited judges trained to look for color, mouthfeel, off-flavors and more. Judges then provide feedback to the breweries so they can adjust their technique or recipes.鈥�

Gold medal winners included Flock of Moons鈥� Waning Crescent, a Vienna lager; Lasso Brewing鈥檚 Lasso Pils, a German pilsner; and Sidetrack Brewing Company鈥檚 Basecamp IPA, a West Coast-style India pale ale. The three gold-medal winners then advanced to a Best of Show evaluation, where Sidetrack鈥檚 IPA emerged as the overall winner.

鈥淚t鈥檚 an awesome feeling, especially since Albuquerque is so IPA heavy, and there鈥檚 a lot of good IPAs in the city,鈥� Cordell Rincon, Sidetrack head brewer, said.

鈥淭hat鈥檚 like our main house beer. That鈥檚 the one that kind of goes (out) the door faster than every other one. We just try to keep it approachable for everybody, just classic West Coast, not too high. We鈥檙e happy to win with the house beer more than anything.鈥�

Edmonston said the plan is for the NMBG to host the awards on an annual basis while keeping the timeframe in late August. It鈥檚 quite likely that more categories will be added in the future. That wasn鈥檛 possible this year due to the short-notice nature of the event.

鈥淲e plan to add more categories. Originally, we thought we had another year to organize our first awards, so when the timeline was pushed up, we had to adjust our expectations,鈥� Edmonston said. 鈥淲e chose to focus on limited styles rather than being overwhelmed with too many categories in our first year. I don鈥檛 know what those styles will be just yet; we鈥檙e waiting to hear back from our brewery members to see what categories they鈥檇 like to enter for next year.鈥�

STATE FAIR BEER: Boxing Bear Brewing is paying tribute to the 100th anniversary of Route 66 with its special beer release for the New Mexico State Fair.

The Centennial Lager is described as having a 鈥渟mooth malt profile and a refreshing pilsner sweetness,鈥� according to a release. Boxing Bear is the latest brewer to collaborate with the State Fair, joining the likes of Marble, Ex Novo and La Cumbre, among others.

鈥淲e have seen what some of the past State Fair beers have been, and it鈥檚 always going to be something that鈥檚 easily drinkable by any beer lover,鈥� Eddie Dominguez, Boxing Bear head brewer, said. 鈥淎nd so we were like, we鈥檒l just stay on that line and we鈥檒l create a crushable beer that people can enjoy, and it鈥檚 not going to scare anybody away by being overly hoppy or anything like that.鈥�

The fact that the beer is brewed with Centennial Hops is just a happy coincidence that works well with the celebration of The Mother Road.

鈥淲e wanted to just build a really easy drinking lager and then throw the Centennial hops in there just as an homage. There鈥檚 just hundreds of varieties of different hops, and we just kind of lucked out that there鈥檚 a Centennial hop,鈥� Dominguez said.

The Centennial Lager will be available on draft and in cans during the State Fair, which takes place from Thursday, Sept. 10, through Sunday, Sept. 20. It can also currently be found at select retail outlets and at Boxing Bear taprooms until the supply runs out. The extra exposure is always welcome for Boxing Bear, which has already won the IPA Challenge and medaled at the North American Brewers Association International Beer and Cider Awards earlier this year.

鈥淚t鈥檚 opening doors to new potential customers that aren鈥檛 really familiar with our beer,鈥� Dominguez said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 just cool to see our name on the beer that鈥檚 going to be available at the State Fair.鈥�
