The Traditional Spanish Market is not just about selling art, it鈥檚 about passing down tradition and knowledge.

Nicolas Otero was named the 2026 Traditional Spanish Market Master Artist. He has been part of the event since the 鈥�90s, when he participated in the youth market. Otero got his start creating retablos, but over the years has added other styles including altars, botolos and hide paintings.

He said he has seen that masters are not only those respected for their work, but those who go beyond, upholding and promoting tradition.

鈥淚 think being a master would indicate that it鈥檚 thinking beyond yourself and really about passing on the tradition to others, what you know, and what you鈥檝e learned,鈥� he said.

Curiosity led him to research and consult publications by the first santeros.

鈥淚 think that contributes a lot to the authenticity of your craft,鈥� Otero said. 鈥淲hen you can research, read and understand its origins, and then go forward from there.鈥�

Otero teaches art at Bosque School and has also served as a mentor in the youth market since college. He said some students pick up art and continue with it, while others don鈥檛.

鈥淚 just attribute that to their life鈥檚 journey,鈥� Otero said.

When he began as a youth artist, he said there was a lot of learning and maturing to understand what he was creating. Now he wants to pass that knowledge on.

鈥淩ight now, there鈥檚 like this lull of the number of people willing to do the traditions,鈥� Otero said. 鈥淪o the teaching part is very important because that kind of inspires folks to pick it up and try it themselves.鈥�

When creating works, Otero said he thinks about which saints are relevant to the state. He鈥檚 created works featuring Saint Lawrence, the patron saint of firefighters, and San Isidro, the patron saint of farmers, in reaction to the fires and drought in the state.

Arlene Cisneros Sena, a featured artist at the market, has participated for over 30 years and mentored more than 30 youth artists. This year she is mentoring two students.

Monica Sosaya Halford is the great-granddaughter of an artist who participated in the market for almost 50 years and has since retired from the market, she said. Cisneros Sena is also mentoring her own granddaughter.

Cisneros Sena creates retablos for the market and makes a lot of her own pigments. She said she has always had a fascination with learning the traditional processing techniques and passing them to people like her granddaughter.

鈥淚t鈥檚 probably this year or after this market that she鈥檚 going to start learning how to produce her own pigments and her own gesso,鈥� Cisneros Sena said.

She became involved with the market through family as well. Her brother was on the board of the Spanish Colonial Art Society and encouraged her to volunteer with the market. Her husband also encouraged her to participate.

鈥淢y husband Richard said to me, 鈥榃hat are you doing? You know, you should be an artist. You can do this,鈥欌�� Cisneros Sena said. 鈥淎nd I鈥檝e been an artist all my life 鈥� I was a little intimidated by it because I wasn鈥檛 certain that I knew enough historically, being an artist isn鈥檛 all that this tradition is about.鈥�

Cisneros Sena was drawn to retablos. She had some knowledge of the saints and their histories and knew she could learn more.

鈥淚 like painting and learning about the historical, the iconography, the attributes of not only just saints but New Mexican imagery, New Mexican saints,鈥� Cisneros Sena said.

Cisneros Sena said there are a lot of distractions for young artists, like social media, and Traditional Spanish Market is an opportunity to say 鈥渢his is who you are. This is culturally a very important part of your life, and you need to know more about who you are and how important you are.鈥�
