Darius Rucker credits Al Green as the reason he went into music. When he first heard the soul and R&B singer as a kid, he was hooked.

鈥淎ll I wanted to do was sound like that guy,鈥� Rucker said. 鈥淚 want to sing like that guy, want to be that guy, and that was really the catalyst for all of it.鈥�

Rucker started his music career in college with the rock band Hootie and the Blowfish, which gained mainstream fame with their 1994 album 鈥淐racked Rear View.鈥� While still a member of the band, he transitioned to a solo country career in 2008. He said what keeps him touring is how wonderful and unbelievable it still is.

鈥淚 still can鈥檛 believe I get to play music for people for a living. That鈥檚 all I鈥檝e wanted to do since I was 5 years old and to think that I鈥檓 60 now and actually get to do it and still get to do it at the level I get to do,鈥� Rucker said.

While Green influenced his love for music, artists like Buck Owens and Radney Foster inspired his move to country.

鈥淩adney came up with this record called 鈥楧el Rio, TX 1959鈥� and it physically changed the way I heard music,鈥� Rucker said.

鈥淚 remember going into Hootie rehearsals after listening to that all day one day, and going, 鈥楬ey, we should be a country band,鈥欌�� Rucker said, 鈥渁nd they all laughed and everything, but 鈥� that record changed my life.鈥�

Rucker released his first country album, 鈥淟earn to Live,鈥� in September 2008 and hasn鈥檛 stopped since. The country singer will be performing at First Financial Credit Union Amphitheater on Friday, July 24.

Fans can expect to hear all the radio hits, plus a lot more, over the almost two-hour show, including songs by Hootie and the Blowfish.

鈥淚鈥檓 proud of what Hootie鈥檚 done in our hits, so you鈥檙e going to hear those songs,鈥� Rucker said.

鈥淢y goal every night is for that person that paid their hard-earned money to see me play to walk out of there, going, 鈥楳an, I want to see that again,鈥欌�� he said.

Rucker said he believes that if he and his band aren鈥檛 having fun, the crowd won鈥檛 either, so he always aims for a high-energy, electric performance.

One of his favorite songs to play at his country concerts is a Hootie and the Blowfish original, 鈥淟et Her Cry.鈥�

鈥淭hat song just takes people to a place when they were a lot younger and they were in a totally different place,鈥� Rucker said, 鈥渁nd it meant something to them then, and getting to watch people go back and experience that thought again for a second, I love playing that song.鈥�

Rucker said seeing generations of fans is 鈥渁 testament to the music.鈥�

鈥淵ou鈥檙e making music that people will listen to that鈥檚 standing the test of time.鈥�
