If you ask me who the state鈥檚 most famous resident has been, I might say it鈥檚 a tie between Smokey Bear and Billy the Kid. Our very own Smokey and the bandit, if you will. You can learn more about The Kid this weekend at the Old Lincoln Days. Or shoot on over to one of these other events.

鈥楢y, Compadre!鈥�
The Sandia Performing Arts Company is bringing Rudolfo Anaya鈥檚 鈥淎y, Compadre!鈥� to the South Broadway Cultural Center at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, and Sunday, Aug. 9, and to the National Hispanic Cultural Center at 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14, and Saturday, Aug. 15, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16. 鈥淎y, Compadre!鈥� is a 鈥渉umorous and poignant look at the lives of two middle-aged Hispanic couples in New Mexico as they navigate the personal, physical, and marital crises of aging.鈥� Tickets to the shows at the SBCC are $20-$25 at ; and $23-$25 at for the NHCC shows. The SBCC is located at 1025 Broadway Blvd SE, and the NHCC is located at 1701 Fourth St. SW.
Fantastic voyage
The National Youth Opera Academy, in collaboration with the Young Voices of the Santa Fe Opera, is going on an 鈥淥dyssey鈥� at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7. This version of Homer鈥檚 classic saga is 鈥渁 fast-paced, comedic introduction to one of the oldest stories ever told.鈥� Tickets are $33-$306 at . The Lensic Performing Arts Center is located at 211 W. San Francisco St. in Santa Fe.
The olden days
Step back in time at the Old Lincoln Days at the Lincoln Historic Site on Friday, Aug. 7, through Sunday, Aug. 9. The event will feature lectures about Billy the Kid, children鈥檚 activities, live music, a parade, 鈥淟ast Escape of Billy the Kid鈥� pageant and more. Also a part of this year鈥檚 event is a special screening of 鈥淵oung Guns.鈥� Admission to the Lincoln Historic Site is $7 per adult and free for qualified individuals at . Tickets to the pageant are separate and only available at the gate and are $10 for adults, $6 for children ages 6-12, and free for children age 5 and younger. The historic site is located at 027 Calle la Placita in Lincoln.
In the Heights
The Gallery ABQ is holding an opening reception for 鈥淪andia Heights Artists" from 5-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7. The salon show, which runs through Aug. 28, features works by artists participating in the upcoming Sandia Heights Artists Tour in September. The dog days of summer
Montgomery Pool is hosting its annual Doggy Paddle from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8. Before the pool closes for the season, four-legged friends are invited to take a dip. Candlelight is bringing two musical performances to the African American Performing Arts Center at Expo New Mexico on Saturday, Aug. 8.
