Holding a spring release party hasn’t necessarily been an annual tradition at Gruet Winery, but it felt more than appropriate this year.

“It just so happens that we have a bunch of new releases, and I was like, ‘Oh, let’s have a party and have fun and celebrate,’” Regina Wilson, Gruet regional manager, said. “That’s what we’re doing to showcase all these new wines.”

Gruet’s Spring Release Party will take place simultaneously at the winery’s Albuquerque and Santa Fe tasting rooms on Saturday, April 25. At these events, attendees will get to enjoy samples of Gruet’s newest sparkling and still wines. Additionally, there will be a “grazing table” that will likely include some charcuterie options as well as other fun pairings. As an added bonus, special event-only discounts will be available on bottles of wine.

One of those releases happens to coincide with the centennial celebration of Route 66. The Brut 66 is a sparkling wine that, coincidentally, is 66% chardonnay and 34% pinot noir. The bottle comes complete with a special label depicting the iconic Route 66 in Albuquerque. That version is available exclusively at Gruet’s tasting rooms and will be a highlight of the upcoming release party. A wholesale version with a different label will be available through various retailers.

“This was harvested back in 2021. It laid on en tiraje for over three years,” Carrie Gurule, Gruet head winemaker, said. “The way that the dosage, everything just came about — the label with this, it’s just such a huge team effort.”

Gruet spring releases

Brut 66: Aromatic notes of elderflower, lychee, peach and gooseberry lead to a palate of crisp apple and bright lemon zest. Hints of butterscotch and walnut emerge mid-palate, finishing with marzipan and brioche. Delicate bubbles add a creamy texture.

La Chérie: A pale golden hue fills the glass. The nose is delicate, like sunshine and lavender carried on a warm breeze, with beeswax, golden honey and a fresh lift of citrus. On the palate, flavors of pear and citrus mingle with lavender and a touch of honey sweetness that balances beautifully against the wine’s bright natural acidity. The finish is long, lingering with subtle lavender and fresh citrus.

All-American Brut: Notes of hawthorn flower, apricot and dragon fruit lead the way. On the palate, golden apple, lemon zest and a touch of butterscotch carry through to a warm almond brioche finish.

Wilson added, “The Brut 66 is just really special. We love Albuquerque. We love New Mexico and our roots and our history here. So it was a no-brainer to get to celebrate this with the local community.”

The team at Gruet is also excited about La Chérie, a spritz that was crafted with Méthod Champenoise wine and locally sourced honey from Los Poblanos Historic Inn & Organic Farm. The La Chérie is 81% pinot noir and 19% chardonnay and spent 22 months en tirage. The wine will be available exclusively in the Gruet tasting rooms and at Los Poblanos locations.

“It smells beautiful. It tastes lovely,” Gurule said. “To be able to collaborate with Los Poblanos is always a fun, fun thing. Just working on this special dosage was really incredible. La Chérie is ‘sweetheart, honey, beloved one.’ It has all those nice French meanings, and that definitely holds close to my heart, too.”

Gruet has also put together a release in conjunction with the ϼ States’ 250th birthday celebration, which will officially be recognized on July 4. The All-American Brut, a Méthod Champenoise sparkling wine, has been created to help commemorate the occasion. The All-American Brut is 67% chardonnay and 33% pinot noir and spent 43 months en tirage.

“We’ve got the Summer Olympics coming (in 2028) and we’ve got (the World Cup in the U.S.) and all this really great fun American stuff happening, and so we did make a special label in celebration of that,” Wilson said. “Also a gorgeous, gorgeous wine, so we’ll be showcasing that one (at the release) as well.”

MORE WINE EVENT FUN: D.H. Lescombes Winery and Tasting Room will host the Spring Fling Winefest at its Deming location on Saturday, April 25. The event runs from noon to 10 p.m. and features a variety of wine-related activities including a wine blending class, a “bling your bottle” contest, Sip and Paint and a bottle-opening competition.

Live music, vendors, food trucks and a cornhole tournament will also be part of the festivities. General admission tickets are $11.65, though some events such as the classes come with an additional fee. For tickets and more info visit .
