The ABQ BioPark Botanic Garden is alive with the sounds of music.

On Friday, July 3, the New Mexico Philharmonic will perform 鈥淎 Fourth of July Weekend Celebration: NMPhil at the Botanic Garden!鈥 The concert will be conducted by Jason Altieri, who said the performance will feature familiar music, including several songs from 鈥淭he Great American Songbook.鈥

鈥淓verything from jazz to Broadway, and of course, with our patriotic favorites as well,鈥 he said.

When selecting the programming, Altieri said he went with songs that everyone would enjoy, including songs from the musicals 鈥淐hicago鈥 and 鈥淲icked鈥 and, of course, works by composer John Williams.

鈥淲e also have a salute to the Armed Forces,鈥 Altieri said, 鈥渁nd a great little number that shows the music (of) Duke Ellington.鈥

He has not visited the botanic garden before but looks forward to how the space will enhance the show. The outdoor venue, he said, gives a celebratory feel with the warmth of the sun and a relaxing atmosphere.

鈥淚t鈥檚 all part of the celebration, just to be outside and just have that festival atmosphere where everyone was able to just sit around and relax and listen to some really good music,鈥 Altieri said.

He has performed with the NMPhil before and is looking forward to seeing old friends again and making music with them. Along with conducting, he will lend his voice to some of the songs and talk about the pieces beforehand.

The concert is to celebrate America鈥檚 250th anniversary, Altieri said. While some say that the country is in its teenage years, 250 is still a huge milestone, he said.

鈥淲e have our own identity when it comes to music, and it鈥檚 really fun to revisit a lot of these things and celebrate great American music with all fellow Americans,鈥 Altieri said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a lot of fun.鈥
