PBS’ ‘Ages of Ice’ explores Greenland’s frozen frontier

David Tennant narrates the new series on scientists tracking dramatic changes in Earth’s ice sheets

The three-part docuseries “Ages of Ice” will air at 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, on New Mexico PBS, channel 5.1. The next two episodes will air at 9 p.m. on Sept. 23 and Sept. 30, on channel 5.1. Each episode will be available to stream on the PBS app after broadcast.

Every day scientists are taking a long, hard look at the Arctic areas of the world.

The PBS docuseries, “Ages of Ice,” goes behind the scenes with these researchers, like Alun Hubbard, director of the Thule Institute at the University of Oulu in Finland, and professor at UiT The Arctic University of Norway.

Hubbard has spent three decades studying Greenland’s icy interior, cataloging the journey of an ice sheet that begins with a single snowflake.

Antarctica and Greenland hold two of the world’s great ice sheets, which reflect heat, store water and help keep the planet’s climate in balance.

“We’re just coming out of a very frigid, dark winter,” Hubbard says. “Days like today, I just wish I’d done tropical reefs. You can see, well, actually, it’s not a flat ice sheet. What we’ve got behind us is a pretty impressive canyon, which carries a big, big melt river during the summer.”

Northern Pictures created the docuseries, which combines epic adventure, frontline science and deeply human stories.

According to PBS, “Ages of Ice” immerses viewers in places of staggering beauty and brutal extremes from the frozen Arctic Ocean to the high plateaus of Antarctica. Scientists explore the harshest frontiers on Earth and uncover the changes transforming the world. The series is narrated by Scottish actor David Tennant.

“Ages of Ice” will air at 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, on New Mexico PBS, channel 5.1. The next two episodes will air at 9 p.m. Sept. 23 and Sept. 30, on channel 5.1. Each episode will be available to stream on the PBS app after broadcast.

A crack in the ice is where most would turn back, Hubbard says, but to understand what’s happening to the ice sheet, you have to step inside.

“It’s just such a sort of weird, surreal, creamy whip kind of ice skate. You couldn’t dream this up,” Hubbard says.

Greenland’s ice sheet has endured for millions of years, but canyons are beginning to reveal how quickly it’s changing.

“It’s really lovely to get up close to the ice and see all the amazing detail, and then start to think, well, why is that looking like that? Why is that doing that? This really does, to me, show the absolute power of water in sculpting, sculpting this ice, and the effect and the impact it has on that ice. In a couple of months, there’s no way to be here,” Hubbard says. “This will be topped off, full of an absolute torrent of meltwater, with huge amounts of energy, huge amounts of power.”

Hubbard says, each summer, the Greenland ice sheet sheds more than 250 billion tons of ice. In just three decades, the rate of ice loss has increased.

“The ice sheet has always melted,” he says. “If it didn’t, it would take over the whole planet. But this ice sheet, which holds over seven meters of global sea level rise, that’s been taking a real hammering in the last two decades.”

Meltwater rivers wind their way across the ice, only to disappear down deep shafts known as mirrors, draining into the depths below. Hubbard is monitoring the changes and believes that the sinkholes can unlock new clues to the accelerating change.

“The idea here is we’re going to put in a methane sensor to see what methane may be expelling out of the ice and from the bed. It’s only a hunch, but you have to try,” he says. “I’m very confident. Bit nervous now, actually. Been thinking about it too much. Hopefully, I won’t be doing a Darwin Award today.”
