Q: Last week you answered a concerned tree owner鈥檚 question about the leaves already falling from their trees. It made sense, but we are having sort of the same trouble with two large evergreen pine trees we have in our backyard. They seem to be dropping a lot of needles lately. We just bought the house in February and don鈥檛 have much of a history on the grounds but don鈥檛 want to lose either of these two trees. They are part of the reason we bought this home. Are they OK, do you think? 鈥� N.P., Albuquerque  

A: Unless there is a lot of weepy sap and gunk on the needles, I truly don鈥檛 think there is an issue. More than likely the needles the trees are shedding are what I know as three year needles.

Think about it: you have the new needles that are growing from the tips of the twigs and branches. All fresh and green.

Then behind them you have last year鈥檚 needles 鈥� think of them as two-year needles. Still green and sturdy, doing everything a pine needle needs to be doing.

Further in are the three-year needles. These needles are tired and have given their all to the health and maintenance for the trees. So, the tree sort of shuts off the spigots at those three-year needles because it (the tree) has needles that are full of vigor and will depend on the two-year and this year鈥檚 needles to keep growing and maintaining itself.

Now this only works as long as the trees have assistance from you, their new caregivers.

My question and concern is, are you watering these lovely trees properly? Do you offer good, deep soaking waterings when you do water as opposed to a ten-minute splash and dash type of watering? Are there moats built surrounding the trees, and are they nearly as wide as the trees reach?

Sometimes that description gets lost in translation, so I want you to do this exercise. Stand up straight and tall. Now extend your arms out to your sides 鈥� like a cross 鈥� straight out. Next point your fingers downwards towards the ground. See all that space beneath you? Where your fingers are pointing, that鈥檚 the area the moat wall needs to be built if you were the tree. So you get out there and create or extend the moat wall where your trees reach their furthest out, and that鈥檚 where you place the hose so the large moat gets filled slowly and deeply when you do water.

All of that said, that works if you are watering with a hose. Is there an existing watering system, tubes and drippers or soaker hose installed that assists you with the watering? If so, get out and check to be sure that system is in top shape and performing as it鈥檚 supposed to.

Now while you are out there making sure your water system of choice is up to snuff, give the trees a good look-see. Notice any clusters of bugs? Any weepy, sappy spots on the trunk and/or major branches? Hopefully not, but if so, you鈥檒l need to tend to the evergreens in order to get them back to their prime.

I won鈥檛 go into any of those concerns now because I truly believe your trees are dropping their three-year needles and that鈥檚 not a bad thing, really. It鈥檚 just what evergreen needle trees do.
