This November, New Mexicans will have the opportunity to 鈥淰ote for Change.鈥� The idea behind Constitutional Amendment 4 is simple: The people making decisions about our state should always reflect our communities and the diversity of our lived experience. And that requires modernizing our Legislature to include limited salaries for those serving.

New Mexico has long been proud of having a citizen legislature. But serving in the Legislature today means something different than it did even a decade ago. It means taking months away from work with no salary. It means preparing and participating in interim committees where you鈥檙e only paid to attend, but not for the hours of reading and preparing for deep and highly impactful policy conversations. It means making difficult sacrifices every day to show up for our communities.

For far too many New Mexicans, that's simply not an option.

The result of the current system is that too many qualified people never even consider running for office 鈥� not because they lack the passion or ability, but because they can't afford the financial sacrifice. Teachers, nurses, firefighters, tradespeople, entrepreneurs, social workers, nonprofit leaders, working parents and students are all underrepresented because serving without pay is not possible for them.

We will never know the number of talented and dedicated New Mexicans who felt called to serve their communities, but opted not to run for the Legislature because it wasn鈥檛 financially possible for them and their families. For these community members, and for all of the future leaders of our state, it is time for change.

I have dedicated my career to community organizing, and to helping young people build better futures through job training for the industries of the future of our economy. I know all too well what happens when barriers keep talented people from contributing to our workforce and the economy. We all lose out.

The same is true in government.

When only people with financial flexibility can realistically and easily serve, our Legislature misses out on perspectives that reflect the everyday experiences of New Mexicans.

Constitutional Amendment 4 is about opening that door to ensure that our Legislature always reflects the people it serves.

The proposal includes an important safeguard: Legislators could never earn more than the income of a typical New Mexico household. Meaning their pay would fall if household incomes fall and could only rise when household incomes rise. The entire amendment was built with accountability in mind.

Our voices. Our future.

That's what 鈥淰ote for Change鈥� is about.

Election Day will be here before we know it. If you value fairness, and opportunity for all New Mexicans to serve in the Legislature, we ask for your vote during early voting or on Election Day.
