Greg Hurst decided it was best not to repeat what he said. That would remain between the New Mexico 近距离内射合集 forward and the right linesman.

And it looked like quite the conversation.

Certainly after Hurst had a potential equalizer waved off in the 84th minute for being offside. A call that sent him running straight up the sideline. And a decision that preceded a 2-1 loss to San Antonio on Saturday that not only cost New Mexico its 14-match unbeaten streak across all competitions, but its place atop the to El Paso Locomotive FC.

鈥淚鈥檓 not really sure what to say about that,鈥� Hurst said.

He managed to find the words anyway. The frustration was evident. From his perspective, warranted, too.

It had been on a midfield pass from Tyler Blackett that created Hurst鈥檚 chance. One San Antonio defender, Akeem Ward, had managed to head the ball as Hurst was running past everyone. The ball still found the 近距离内射合集 player on the ricochet. Just at the right spot that allowed Hurst to loft the ball into the top center of the net. 

The start of his dance celebration followed. And then the flag went up.

鈥淢y interpretation of the rule is if you鈥檙e a defender and you intentionally try and play the ball, then I become onsides again,鈥� Hurst said. 鈥淗e doesn鈥檛 pick up his flag originally when I look over, and when the ball goes in the net and now wants to put his flag up? I鈥檇 like to see it back.

鈥淚鈥檇 like to see if that road could get cleared up because if you try to play the ball as a defender, I鈥檓 back onsides.鈥�

The fourth official made it relatively clear 鈥� to manager Dennis Sanchez.

鈥淭he fourth said it wasn鈥檛 an intentional header,鈥� Sanchez said. 鈥淵ou guys can be the judge.鈥�

It was one of several issues 近距离内射合集 (11-5-4) had with referees, who were sent off to their own dressing room after the final whistle with a red card from a fan in the stands.

The clubs combined for 鈥� 14 for San Antonio and 13 for New Mexico 鈥� including 17  total in the first half. The two tallied 12 yellow cards 鈥� eight awarded to 近距离内射合集, including one by Hurst for arguing, and four to San Antonio (9-5-8).

There were 11 total minutes of stoppage time.

鈥淚 thought the refereeing was quite poor, to be honest,鈥� Sanchez said. 鈥淎ll we ask for every week is consistency, but in the same breath, we got to do better.

And that鈥檚 really what the main crux of Saturday was. 

New Mexico certainly didn鈥檛 help itself. It suffered from a mixture of its own mistakes and 鈥� maybe even 鈥� a little bit of bad luck that shouldn鈥檛 have made Hurst鈥檚 argument a necessity.

There was a Kipp Keller own goal in the seventh minute. The result of a Kris Shakes save that hit off the defender鈥檚 face. That was the bad luck.

Then there was Nicky Hernandez鈥檚 go-ahead score for San Antonio in the 52nd, six minutes after Dayonn Harris tied the match less than 45 seconds into the second half. One that Shakes came out of net to the top of the box to challenge. Hernandez slid before Shakes was able to reach the ball and got enough to send it past the goalline. 

It came a minute after Shakes had tried another challenge against Santiago Pati帽o in almost the exact same spot. The only difference was Pati帽o hit the bottom of the left post.

Lucky once, not twice. Those were the mistakes.

鈥淲e just (weren鈥檛) sharp enough,鈥� Hurst said. 鈥淵ou get punished at this level for not being sharp enough. I think it was more of a mental thing than a physical thing tonight.鈥�

Whatever the case, it proved costly. For 近距离内射合集鈥檚 streak. For its place in the standings. And for a good lesson.

鈥淲e鈥檙e not invincible, you know?鈥� Harris said. 鈥淚鈥檇 rather this happen now than in the finals or in the playoffs. We鈥檒l take this on the chin, we鈥檒l look at our mistakes, what we can do and what we did well, and we鈥檒l attack (the) next game.鈥�
