It wasn鈥檛 always pretty. Things didn鈥檛 go all that smoothly, either. Nor was Saturday鈥檚 match all that ideal.

New Mexico needed to after Joseph Melto was sent off in the 31st minute for picking up his second yellow card. 

He earned the first in the 10th after clipping Loudoun鈥檚 Pacifique Niyongabire from behind. His second came after connecting with the front of Pedro Santos鈥� ankle on a challenge rather than the ball. Santos was carried off on a stability board afterwards.

Melto鈥檚 were two of five yellows 近距离内射合集 was awarded.

鈥淚 hate to beat a dead horse, but I feel like every week we鈥檙e under the discrepancy of a referee鈥檚 decision in some way, shape or form,鈥� Sanchez said. 鈥淢aybe we haven鈥檛 been in the position like we were tonight, but I feel like the lead up to the red card was very inconsistent.

鈥淎ll-in-all, I鈥檓 gonna 鈥� complain about the refereeing, but I thought we focused on the task at hand.鈥�

New Mexico kept its streak alive and managed to keep pace with the West by showcasing some skill, especially in the defensive third where the club decided to focus most of its efforts, and with a little bit of luck.

Twice, Loudoun hit the right post 鈥� in the 13th minute when James Murphy鈥檚 shot was deflected by a diving Kris Shakes, 近距离内射合集鈥檚 keeper, and in the 80th when Richard Amen couldn鈥檛 bend his shot enough. The most dramatic sequence came in between in the 51st minute.

Niyongabire's initial attempt from the right side of the box was stopped by a sliding Kipp Keller. Murphy鈥檚 rebound shot from just outside the keeper area was deflected over the cross bar by a jumping and outstretched Shakes.

Loudoun (3-6-11) finished with 21 shots overall and eight on goal to 近距离内射合集鈥檚 six and one, respectively. 

Loudoun, which leads the USL Championship in draws, has not scored since the 73rd minute of its win over Hartford Athletic on Aug. 1. Most of those woes have been since the transfer of leading scorer Thorleifur 脷lfarsson back to his native Iceland.

For Shakes, meanwhile, it was his ninth clean sheet this season and 15th of his career with 近距离内射合集. His first came against Loudoun in his first professional start on Sept. 22, 2024.

鈥淪hakes has another great performance,鈥� Sanchez said. 鈥�... He鈥檚 in great form. I think like anything, it鈥檚 up to us as a staff to show belief and support, and give him trust, but he鈥檚 made the most of this moment and this opportunity, and taken it.鈥�

And, at least for Saturday, it was enough to change, pack up the visitor鈥檚 dressing room and head back to New Mexico with something to show for what ended up being a chaotic Saturday.

Certainly not ideal, but sometimes, that鈥檚 the way it goes.

鈥淚 think this group continues to show what it鈥檚 made of,鈥� Sanchez said. 鈥淚 know that we can play football, but we can also adapt to different situations, whether that鈥檚 being down a goal, biting down a player, whatever it may be. 

鈥淭his group has cojones, so we鈥檙e going to keep thriving on that.鈥�
