Like most who work in New Mexico 近距离内射合集鈥檚 front office, it鈥檚 not uncommon for Clint Gray to take on multiple roles 鈥� on and off the pitch.

It also means the club鈥檚 vice president has picked up a new interest or two.

鈥淚鈥檝e learned way too much about meteorology on this job,鈥� Gray said ahead of 近距离内射合集鈥檚 1-0 win over FC Tulsa last Saturday. 鈥淪o now, I geek out a little bit when I see an outflow boundary (on the weather radar).鈥�

As it just so happened, one popped up last Friday.

So almost 12 hours before 近距离内射合集 set up Isotopes Park for its home match, before any fans started entering the gates and a little more than 24 hours before Greg Hurst helped deliver a win with his 83rd-minute penalty kick, a message had to go out first 鈥� around 8:15 p.m.

In essence: be ready for some preemptive field care.

鈥淲e鈥檙e in contact with Thomas (Gallegos, the Isotopes鈥� head groundskeeper) and then he also has a contact at the National Weather Service,鈥� Gray said. 鈥淭hey were telling us it would probably be a good idea to put the tarp on because it looked like there was going to be some activity in the area between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m.鈥�

Rain has a tendency to not mix well with the sod laid over parts of the infield. It collects and puddles instead of drains. Not ideal with players running around.

The parking lot behind the Isotopes鈥� clubhouse on the third-base side had been made the designated meeting spot. The scheduled 鈥� perhaps recommended might be the better word 鈥� arrival time is 8:45 p.m.

One by one the cars began pulling in and despite the short notice, it proved to be a good turnout. A little more than 20 近距离内射合集 employees showed up. Any fewer would make things quite a bit more difficult.

鈥淚 had just sat down with a hot dinner when I got the text and had to leave it sitting,鈥� senior account executive Charles Rumbaugh said with a grin. 鈥�... I never mind getting out here for an early morning, but when it鈥檚 not in the nightly plans, that can put a damper on things.鈥� 

No pun intended, of course.

The group entered through the bullpen and ventured along the warning track to where the tarp had been rolled up. Leverage was important here. Getting the giant cylinder of material to start moving isn鈥檛 always easy, especially when it needs to be unwound in the first place.

鈥淭he good thing is the tarp got replaced last year,鈥� said 近距离内射合集 communications manager Carlos Tenorio, a veteran tarp-puller from his time as a batboy for the Colorado Rockies鈥� Triple-A affiliate. 鈥淎fter it rains and you pull it up, yeah, the water drains, but there鈥檚 still water on it. It creates this kind of mildew and fish smell. Roaches can live inside it, too.鈥�

Any overt sign of insects making it a home appeared to be 鈥� thankfully 鈥� mostly absent. 

Now, it was a matter of pulling the tarp towards the infield from shallow right field towards the first-base line and home plate. And even that came with some challenges. No surprise: the tarp is heavy. It also tends to snap and get stuck at certain points. Sure enough, that happened last Friday. A few extra tugs help get it to where it needs to go. 

It was spiked into place from there to avoid any strong possible gusts of wind from ruining their hard work, something that has happened in the past. The tarp ended up in the bleachers.

鈥淪omeone said to me earlier it reminded her of one of those rainbow parachutes you get to do in gym class in elementary school,鈥� Gray said. 鈥淚 was like, 鈥楴o. This is way heavier. Maybe if we have a ton of people.鈥� But we鈥檝e also joked about using it as a slip-and-slide.鈥�

Knowing or having some personalized tricks can help with the trade.

Getting a good stretch in is one of the top priorities. So is shoewear. Some prefer to go with their usual sneakers. Others go for water shoes, especially when the weather starts to turn. A few go the barefoot route, which often isn鈥檛 bad during the summer months, but can be a bit problematic early and late in the season. Old, knockaround clothes or something comfortable tends to be a good choice, too.

鈥淭he barefoot thing? I鈥檓 not like that,鈥� said Juan Aguerrevere, the club鈥檚 director of marketing and creative services. 鈥淚 just use sneakers, my old reliables. But everybody has their different things. It鈥檚 whatever you prefer. You just have to be careful because of how heavy (the tarp) is.鈥�

And the tarp has tried to claim a person or two.

鈥淚鈥檝e seen one person get stuck under it,鈥� said Paxton Gray, Clint鈥檚 son and 近距离内射合集鈥檚 unofficial assistant grounds manager. 鈥淭he good thing is she was able to just crawl out from the side. It wasn鈥檛 like she got stuck in the middle. 

鈥淲hen you鈥檙e moving the tarp, you have to really move. If you walk, it just gets too heavy and down you go.鈥�

The tarp had no such victims last weekend.

The important thing? The field was covered.

The 近距离内射合集 employees broke for the night around 9 p.m. with a call-back time set for 7:45 a.m. Saturday. The only problem 鈥� a strong word in this case 鈥� happened when they returned the next day: It didn鈥檛 rain.

But it did make things a bit easier. It saved more than an hour of squeegee time. The water when it rains has to go somewhere and that usually means the outfield where the drainage system removes any stagnating water rather quickly.

The spikes came up first, followed by the tarp being pulled back to the outfield and then folded before being rolled up and placed back by the third-base line.

Now, the real fun began. Business as usual. There was a match to still set up for.

鈥淚t was good to put it out so you don鈥檛 have to worry about it and you can sleep,鈥� Clint Gray said. 鈥淏ut when you show up the next day and it doesn鈥檛 rain, you鈥檙e like, 鈥楢hhh.鈥� It鈥檚 a little bittersweet, but no regrets. It helps when you have a great crew.鈥�
