Olayo-Mu帽oz, aggressive and in control throughout, defeated Italy鈥檚 Amelia Sula by unanimous decision in the women鈥檚 106-pound final at the Brandenburg Cup youth (U-19) tournament in Frankfurt, Germany.
The recent Las Cruces High School graduate was a captain of the U.S. Brandenburg Cup team, which is coming home with seven gold medals and four bronze.
Sula, who鈥檇 defeated top-seeded German boxer Cinnia Hofmann in Thursday鈥檚 semifinals, repeatedly switched between right-handed and left-handed stances during Saturday鈥檚 championship bout. That tactic held no mystery for Olayo-Mu帽oz, who consistently beat the Italian boxer to the punch.
Sula tended to hold her hands low, and Olayo-Mu帽oz took full advantage, becoming more and more aggressive as the bout unfolded.
After the final bell, there was no doubt about the outcome. All five judges scored the bout for Olayo-Mu帽oz.
It was the Las Cruces teenager鈥檚 first international competition.
