Frolic among the flowers Saturday, Aug. 29, as the Sunflower Festival pops up in Mountainair.

Anne Ravenstone, Manzano Mountain Art Council president and event coordinator, said the back roads are usually lush with sunflowers, but the dry weather has impeded growth. But there will be no shortage of sunflowers at this year鈥檚 festival.

鈥淲e have planted sunflowers in town, and we decorate sunflowers everywhere,鈥� Ravenstone said.

Megan Schwingle, Manzano Mountain Art Council treasurer, said the beauty of Mountainair is one of the many reasons to attend.

鈥�(It鈥檚) a fun place to visit and has a lot of cultural opportunities around 鈥�,鈥� Schwingle said. 鈥淪o I think, if you鈥檙e going to come visit Mountainair, it鈥檚 a good time.鈥�

She said there are a lot of nature activities in the area, and the Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument is a short drive from Mountainair. To get the most out of the festival and the area, she recommends getting there early.

鈥淕et here when the festival starts to kind of beat the heat,鈥� Schwingle said, which leaves the afternoon free to visit local businesses.

Ravenstone said the event used to draw in low numbers, but when the town became involved, thousands of visitors started attending.

鈥淭his festival really means a lot to the town,鈥� Ravenstone said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 the biggest day for just about every person, every business in town.鈥�

The festival will feature live musicians, a wine and beer garden, more than 50 fine art vendors and more. It includes a sunflower hat and costume contest, which is where Ravenstone said she has seen some of the most creative uses of sunflowers.

鈥淪ome people look like sunflower butterflies that dress up for this contest,鈥� she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 really pretty amazing.鈥�

She said the Sunflower Festival runs on the commitment of volunteers, some of whom have participated since the beginning.

Ravenstone said attendees and volunteers come because the Sunflower Festival is important to the community and people want to see it thrive.

鈥淲e get nothing but positive feedback from all the people who come to the festival,鈥� Ravenstone said. 鈥淚t just has a great atmosphere.鈥�
