Now in its tenth year, the Placitas Garden Tour is still growing plants and community.

The event used to be held in spring but moved closer to autumn a few years ago.

鈥淭he fall provides a lot of beauty in New Mexico,鈥� Sandy Liakus, Placitas Garden Tour chair, said.

The later months offer a very different view of the gardens, Liakus said, with plants like chamisa and crepe myrtles in season.

鈥淲e do have gardens that have beautiful roses,鈥� Liakus said.

While the timing of the garden tour has changed, one thing that hasn鈥檛, Liakus said, is that it is aligned with an art group. In partnership with the Placitas Community Library, artists are stationed in the gardens during the tour and are featured in an exhibit at the library.

鈥淥riginally, it was the plein air painters,鈥� Liakus said. 鈥淭his even goes back before the library, and then, eventually, just seemed to be a good fit to align with the library art committee.鈥�

Artist Linda Novy-Doll is participating for the first time this year, presenting in the 鈥淭ransitions: From the Refined to the Natural鈥� garden.

鈥淚 do kiln-formed glass, and since I鈥檓 not going to be bringing a kiln to the garden, I will be cutting glass pieces by hand,鈥� Novy-Doll said. 鈥淚鈥檒l let anybody who wants to give it a try.鈥�

Novy-Doll has 32 pieces in a 3D display in the Plactias Community Library and will have garden-related pieces resembling petals and flowers at 鈥淭ransitions.鈥�

There are six gardens in the tour, including several legacy garden owners. Irina Castelot is new to the tour with 鈥淎 Garden in Harmony.鈥�

鈥淲e gave this name to the garden because the plants that we have around the garden, the plants that we cultivate, many of them are indigenous plants,鈥� Castelot said.

The landscape is also set up to blend with the surrounding environment, with views of the mountains and hills, she said. Oddie Brown, a legacy owner, whose garden, 鈥淎 Place of Shadow,鈥� will also be part of the tour, helped her design the garden.

鈥淎 Garden in Harmony鈥� features autumn sages, honeysuckle and pomegranates.

鈥淚 didn鈥檛 do very well with roses this year for some reason. I guess it was hot, but there will be a lot of native plants like rabbitbrush and sunflowers,鈥� she said.

Legacy garden owner Erica Wendel-Oglesby has lots of sunflowers throughout 鈥淲ildlife Sanctuary鈥� 鈥� and a lot of critters, hence the garden鈥檚 name.

鈥淲hen I bought the house, it had a lot of cottonwood trees,鈥� Wendel-Oglesby said, 鈥渁nd so the birds love it. The bobcats love it.鈥�

She has seen a mother and baby bobcats in her yard, along with several bird species, including a great horned owl, Cooper鈥檚 hawks and canyon towhees.

鈥淪o you name it, it鈥檚 probably been in my yard,鈥� Wendel-Oglesby said.

Liakus said many people don鈥檛 realize how vibrant the garden community is in Placitas. There are 鈥渁 lot of hidden gardens in Placitas behind courtyard walls,鈥� she said. The garden tour helps show off these hidden gardens.

鈥淲e in Placitas have become a great teaching area for other people all around central New Mexico to come in and see what you can grow, what you can do in a high desert landscape,鈥� Liakus said.
