Grammy-nominated musicians Eliza Gilkyson and Jimmie Dale Gilmore have teamed up with outlaw country legend Ray Wylie Hubbard for 鈥淪ongs and Stories,鈥� a unique concert experience where the three singer-songwriters will swap personal stories in between songs.

Although Gilkyson, Gilmore and Hubbard have been friends for decades, this will be their first time performing together on the same stage.

鈥淲e had talked about (doing a show together) for years, and now, finally, we鈥檝e got it going on,鈥� Gilkyson said. 鈥淲e are very good friends 鈥� and it goes back a ways. Actually, I opened for Ray Wylie in the early 鈥�80s. That was my first gig in Austin, opening for Ray Wylie at the Austin Opera House.鈥�

Gilmore said he was surprised the three hadn鈥檛 performed together sooner.

鈥淓liza Gilkyson and Ray Wylie Hubbard are both close personal friends. But, oddly enough, I鈥檝e done very little performing with them,鈥� Gilmore said. 鈥溾�� So, I鈥檓 really looking forward to this, because we鈥檙e not just friends, but I鈥檓 also a huge fan of both of them. I鈥檓 honored to be on the bill with them.鈥�

Hubbard echoed Gilkyson鈥檚 and Gilmore鈥檚 enthusiasm.

鈥淚鈥檓 really looking forward to hearing Eliza and Jimmie, 鈥檆ause they write such great songs,鈥� Hubbard said. 鈥溾�� All the planets aligned where we could get together to do this. And they may not align again for a while, so it鈥檚 an opportunity for people to come out and be entertained and enjoy the evening and be a part of something, I think, that鈥檚 very unique.鈥�

The three share many similarities, musically and personally.

鈥淲e鈥檙e all coming from the folk tradition,鈥� Gilmore said. 鈥淎nd particularly Ray Wylie and I have a lot of that genuine, old-time country influence. Then, I鈥檇 say we all have a shared love for a huge range of music. And the two of them are both, really, some of the best songwriters of our time.鈥�

Gilkyson, Gilmore and Hubbard straddle the fence between folk and country 鈥� genres that are sometimes marked more by political differences than musical ones, according to Hubbard.

鈥淚鈥檝e never been on the country charts. I mean, I wrote 鈥楻edneck Mother鈥� as a retaliation to 鈥極kie From Muskogee鈥� by Merle Haggard. Back in those days, it was a very political division, kind of like it is nowadays,鈥� Hubbard said. 鈥淏efore Willie Nelson sang at the Armadillo World Headquarters (in 1972), bringing the hippies and the rednecks together, (folk and country) were very separate.鈥�

Hubbard agreed with Gilmore that all three of them care deeply about the craft of songwriting.

鈥淛immie Dale and Eliza are both incredible songwriters, and I feel very fortunate to share the stage with them,鈥� Hubbard said. 鈥淭hen, Eliza on stage is just hilarious, and Jimmy has such a great personality. So, I鈥檓 really looking forward to that. I think that鈥檚 the thing that really puts the three of us on the same page 鈥� that we do have fun with it. We care about our songwriting, but it鈥檚 like we take our songwriting seriously, but we take ourselves lightly. We鈥檙e not too serious about ourselves, and it seems like that works really well.鈥�

Gilkyson agreed that they don鈥檛 take themselves too seriously, but she said they all explore serious themes, including mystical themes, in their songs.

鈥淩ay has been into the great mystic poets, and Jimmie Dale and I shared a spiritual advisor for many years,鈥� Gilkyson said. 鈥溾�� I honestly think they鈥檙e much more Texas-bred than I am, so I think they come to their music and their life philosophy maybe from a different frame of reference. But we鈥檝e come to the same place somehow. 鈥� I think we鈥檝e somehow got the same spiritual philosophy. And I think that is one of the unifying things and why we trust each other and feel very comfortable in each other鈥檚 company. We share an approach to living that has been honed by our own experiences.鈥�

Gilkyson defined her own spiritual philosophy as simply remaining open to life鈥檚 mysteries.

鈥淲hen I write music, I鈥檓 contemplating the big topics, but I don鈥檛 claim to have any answers,鈥� Gilkyson said. 鈥淎nd I don鈥檛 think either Ray or Jimmie would want to say they have any answers, either, but you get the sense that they鈥檙e asking questions.鈥�

At the same time, humor is important to all of them, and Gilkyson said audiences should come prepared to laugh.

鈥淚 think the reason we wanted to do 鈥楽ongs and Stories鈥� is because we do laugh at ourselves. We laugh at certain circumstances and predicaments. We have a kind of comedic take on our lives. And all three of us do love to tell stories,鈥� Gilkyson said.

The plan for the evening is for the singers to take turns singing and telling stories, round-robin-style. In order to keep things fresh and spontaneous, they aren鈥檛 planning to rehearse or even put together a set list ahead of time.

鈥淚t鈥檚 just three friends who are very comfortable with each other and have some history,鈥� Gilkyson said. 鈥淚 look forward to just hanging out on stage together and seeing where the energy goes.鈥�

Gilkyson said she鈥檚 preparing a number of possible songs and stories, depending on what the others end up performing.

鈥淚 have one about an Austin friend who is also an old friend of Jimmie Dale and Ray Wylie. I do a song that鈥檚 all about him that has a very amusing story that goes with it. The song is called 鈥楾he Dark Side of Town.鈥� That one I am going to do for sure, 鈥檆ause I love the story that goes with it. The others, I鈥檓 just kind of feeling it out,鈥� Gilkyson said.

Hubbard said the main objective is to entertain people.

鈥淭he primary purpose is for the people who come to the show to feel like they got their money鈥檚 worth of being entertained,鈥� Hubbard said. 鈥淚鈥檓 an old cat, but it鈥檚 still a joy to get on the stage and see people smile and sing along. And I鈥檒l say something goofy, and they鈥檒l laugh. I think that鈥檚 a big responsibility, to entertain people with music.鈥�
