Deliberation? Not a chance. The consensus was clear.

When it comes to Class 2A 鈥� no matter who leaves or enters 鈥� Texico remains the bully of the block.

鈥淭hey鈥檙e going for a four-peat this year,鈥� Santa Rosa coach David Chavez said. 鈥淪o until someone knocks them off, it鈥檚 Texico and the rest of us.鈥�

The Wolverines, however, have some new neighbors in the back-to-back Class 3A runner-up.

Welcome home, Dexter.

鈥淲ith Dexter coming down, obviously, that makes the whole classification much more difficult,鈥� Eunice coach Greg Jackson said.

It鈥檚 just a matter if the Demons are ready to trade one powerhouse opponent 鈥� St. Michael鈥檚 鈥� for another.

Texico, after all, won its last three state titles by a combined score of 136-14 and returns most of its offensive production to help bolster some of its new pieces.

鈥淚 like our personality,鈥� coach Bob Gilbreath said. 鈥淭his group is laid back. They like to have fun. They work when they need to work, but they enjoy playing the game.鈥�

Cross Figg will try to build off a sophomore campaign in which he led the Wolverines in both passing (1,030 yards, 16 TDs, 10 INTs) and rushing (219 carries, 1,903 yards, 22 TDs). He鈥檒l take the majority of the snaps with junior Austin Haakma, who most played JV in 2025 but has impressed throughout the offseason.

Second-leading receiver Nate Autrey (283 yards, 4 TDs) is also back, while 6-foot-3, 212-pound junior tight end Dexter Chapman has the chance to make a jump and 鈥渃an be special,鈥� Gilbreath said.

If there is one area to wait-and-see, it鈥檚 the offensive line. It鈥檚 a common theme for many in the class. Gone are four, four-year starters, leaving only center Jacob DeMarco as the holdover.

鈥淚鈥檓 eager to see how our offensive line comes along,鈥� Gilbreath said, 鈥渂ecause I know our skilled people are very talented and can do a lot of things.鈥�

The ending to Dexter鈥檚 seasons haven鈥檛 been quite as wonderful as its new 2A foe. A 28-21 loss wto St. Michael鈥檚 for last year鈥檚 3A title came a season after a 28-26 defeat.

The goal is for 2026 to be different. Or at least, that鈥檚 the hope.

鈥淓veryone (in our community) wants us to get over the hump,鈥� coach Sonny Duran said. 鈥淚 want us to get over the dang hump, especially the last two years, and that鈥檚 our mentality.鈥�

Although having the 鈥淪t. Mike鈥檚 of 2A鈥� doesn鈥檛 make it any easier.

But having a plethora of varsity experience should help, even with the loss of players like Omar Loya (888 rushing yards and 13 TDs), Isaac Ramirez (525 receiving yards, 8 TDs) and Diego Munoz (93 tackles, 14 TFL).

The Demons return three of their top six tacklers and 27 of their 39 sacks from a year ago, including Fernando Prieto who recorded 11.

Senior tailback Garet Gonzalez and junior quarterback CJ Granados combined for a little more than 1,300 rushing yards and 16 scores as the Demons鈥� second and fourth options, respectively. They鈥檒l share the backfield with players like Josh Gonzalez, Alexis Castro, Easton Morales and Prieto 鈥� a mixture of young players or those returning from season-ending injuries.

Granados also threw for 1,708 yards, 19 TDs and four interceptions. Duran would like to utilize Granados鈥� arm a little more to balance out an offense that averaged more than 9 yards per carry.

鈥淚t鈥檚 hard to get away from (the run) sometimes, but we do have some good skill guys and we also have a quarterback who can sling it,鈥� Duran said. 鈥淲e want to be closer to 50-50 (run-pass) this year.鈥�

The three other semifinalists 鈥� Legacy Academy, Hozho Academy and runner-up Eunice 鈥� wouldn鈥檛 mind spoiling either Texico鈥檚 or Dexter鈥檚 party.

Legacy logged a third straight winning season, including its first with double digits, in 2025 despite being ousted from the playoffs by Eunice.

鈥淔rom where we were five years ago when we literally built this program from scratch, it鈥檚 just really cool to see all of it really come together,鈥� Silverbacks coach Joey Romero said. 鈥淚t usually takes four or five years to establish a culture and for most of these guys, that鈥檚 all they know.鈥�

Senior linebacker and tailback Xander Chaves (114 tackles;  130 carries, 871 yards, 13 TDs) has been one of those main anchors and will be expected to provide some help for first-time quarterback Cameron Maldonado, a junior who mostly played mop-up duty last season. Junior Christian Perez (388 receiving yards, 4 TDs; 71 tackles) is expected to continue to grow in his fourth year as a starter.

Jonah Bubbico and Julian Torres are a pair of freshmen Romero sees contributing from the slot and at defensive back.

Hozho has to replace its leading passer, rusher and tackler, plenty of other spots that were dotted with seniors. That will surely mean more of a role for players like Abraham Azua, who is set to help anchor a secondary after picking off five passes last season as a junior to go along with 32 catches for 508 yards and five scores 鈥� all team highs.

Eunice, meanwhile, still has its sights set on snapping its championship drought. 

The Cardinals played for a state title for six straight seasons (2015-2021, there was no championship game in 2020) and won the final four of those appearances.

鈥淭he calendar changes, but the expectations never do, and there鈥檚 one expectation,鈥� Jackson said. 鈥淎nd that鈥檚 to win a state championship. That鈥檚 the end everybody is working for, but only one team ends happy. Everyone else packs their things in a black trashbag.鈥�

Eunice lost a number of high-end contributors on defense and offense, especially, from players like Grayson Meek to Dyson Lord. But one of the biggest was quarterback Elijah Melancon (2,786 passing yards, 39 TDs, 7 INTs; 77 tackles, 3 INTs).

He鈥檒l be replaced by a sophomore with a familiar last name 鈥� Isaac Melancon, Elijah鈥檚 younger brother.

鈥淚 told Isaac, and I鈥檒l tell anybody, I鈥檓 coaching Isaac Melancon now, not Elijah Melancon,鈥� Jackson said. 鈥淚 don鈥檛 want him to be a second-rate version of somebody else. I just need Isaac to be Isaac.鈥�

Santa Rosa is coming off a quarterfinals appearance. The team the Lions lost to? Eunice.

Among Santa Rosa鈥檚 main concerns will be finding the production it got from David Chavez, Josh Cordova and Daryn Pacheco. The three combined for more than 2,500 rushing yards and 36 touchdowns.

鈥淲e lost a lot of seniors from last year,鈥� coach David Chavez said. 鈥淪o we were kind of wondering how these kids would respond to that challenge in the offseason and so far so good.鈥�

Marcos Velasquez, Lachlan Ross and Preston Muniz 鈥� all seniors 鈥� will be asked to fill those voids. Velasquez and Muniz at tailback, and Ross at quarterback.

Chavez does have a bit of experience along the offensive line. Justin Velasquez, Miguel Gallegos, Joaquin Gallegos and Jesus Silva 鈥� all juniors 鈥� are back for another season as starters.

Raton closed last season with a 49-47 loss to Hozho in the quarterfinals that snapped a five-game win streak. It was a loss that saw the Tigers rally from being down three touchdowns and score 19 points in the fourth quarter.

鈥淲hen that game ended, I told my team, my coaches, in all the years I鈥檝e coached, I haven鈥檛 seen a team not give up like that,鈥� coach Tory Giacomo said. 鈥淲e didn鈥檛 win the game, but we took something big from that.鈥�

But can Raton build off it?

Senior running back Cael Walton (1,791 yards, 15 TDs) and sophomore quarterback Braylon Walton (779 yards, 12 TDs, 8 INTs) 鈥� they鈥檙e cousins 鈥� will lead the offense. Junior linebacker Colt Ayon (123 tackles) anchors the defense. Sophomore center/defensive end Anthony Bazaldua, sophomore receivers/defensive backs Warren Berry and Cameron Mascarenas, and junior defensive back Justice Romero will be players to watch. 

Like Dexter, Cobre is making the drop from 3A to 2A.

And that might be the most beneficial thing for the Indians after finishing 1-9 in 2025 and 2-8 in 2024.

鈥淐ompetition wise, the level of football is just as high as 3A,鈥� coach Jerry Martinez said. 鈥淏ut the (roster) numbers aren鈥檛 as high. Because of that, I feel like we have a better chance to be able to compete.鈥�

In other words, perhaps this season has the chance to be a little more interesting.

Sophomore quarterback Jay Dominguez is the unquestioned and vocal leader of the players. AZ Castro is the senior center responsible for protecting the quarterback. And then there鈥檚 Jamahl Chavarria.

The 6-foot-2, 220 pound senior is playing organized football for the first time since middle school. He鈥檒l line up at tight end and defensive end.

鈥淲e鈥檙e looking for some big things out of him,鈥� Martinez said. 鈥淗e鈥檚 got great size and athleticism. He鈥檚 one of those kids whose ceiling is really high and can be a force on both sides of the ball.鈥�

8-man

Procopio Padilla ran down the list of what seemed to be the usual suspects.

鈥淵ou got Fort Sumner/House,鈥� the Menaul coach said. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e always really tough. They鈥檙e the defending state champions. Melrose is going to be pretty tough, too. So is Tatum and Mesilla Valley.鈥�

Fort Sumner/House 鈥� led by tight end/defensive end Aaron Torries, who picked up an offer from New Mexico on May 8 鈥� Melrose and Tatum have combined to win every 8-man state championship since 2014. Mesilla Valley was a state semifinalist in 2025 and finished as the classification鈥檚 runner-up the year prior.

Menaul, which lost to Fort Sumner/House in the quarterfinals, is eager to see if it can position itself among the contenders. Especially after the Panthers flip-flopped its offensive and defensive play-callers. Padilla, who ran the defense in the past, will handle the offense. Bruce Langston now has the defensive responsibilities.

鈥淚t鈥檚 just the personnel that鈥檚 on our team,鈥� Padilla said. 鈥淭he offense that I wanted to run was more geared to the skillset that we have, plus coach Langston is an amazing defensive coordinator.鈥�

Seniors Luke Boatman (1,602 passing yards, 18 TDs, 2 INTs; 72 carries, 817 yards, 8 TDs) and Bryan Cabrera (46 carries, 298 yards, TD) will be spearheading that offense. 

The two will split time at quarterback with their own individual packages to help offset the losses of running back Sanjye Harrigan (46 carries, 1,244 yards, 3 TDs) and receiver Carlos Cummins (39 catches, 873 yards, 14 TDs).

鈥淲e鈥檙e expecting some big plays from (Boatman and Cabrera),鈥� Padilla said.

6-man

Logan is the two-time defending state champion. The question now becomes: can the Longhorns join select company in the state record book?

Since the introduction of the 6-man classification in 1987, only two other programs have won three straight state titles 鈥� Mountainair (1989-92) and Lake Arthur (2011-13). 

Logan will attempt to do so after losing top passer Aydin Kotara (1,848 passing yards, 34 TDs, 0 INTs) and leading receiver Mason Wallin (39 catches, 810 yards, 14 TDs). The Longhorns, however, return top rusher and tackler Stratton Schoonover (84 carries, 890 yards, 19 TDs; 115 tackles, 19 TFL). 

The program standing in Logan鈥檚 way? The team it beat in for those back-to-back championships 鈥� Grady. 

Only one program in 6-man history has lost consecutive championship games and came back to win it the next year. That was Hondo Valley in 2014.

But the Bronchos return their top three playmakers from a year ago 鈥� now all seniors 鈥� in quarterback Caden Croy (933 yards, 19 TDs, INT), running back Trey Rush (85 carries, 1,041 yards, 22 TDs) and receiver Zander Ciancio (30 catches, 731 yards, 12 TDs).
