One would be hard pressed to come up with a night of prep football as unquestionably exciting 鈥� and yet indescribably bizarre 鈥� as what went down Thursday around Albuquerque.
Legacy Academy and Hope Christian played a thrilling game at Nusenda Community Stadium, filled with one huge play after another. It was delayed twice 鈥� once for 35 minutes at the start by lightning, which in and of itself is not so strange given that it is still monsoon season.
It was also delayed once in the fourth quarter by lighting. Or a lack thereof. Hope eventually prevailed, 40-27.
鈥�&驳迟; Eldorado 43, Albuquerque High 43
At Wilson Stadium, Albuquerque High and Eldorado slugged it out for roughly three hours and 40 minutes 鈥� without any delays from the heavens 鈥� and were just about to begin a second overtime when the facility was emptied and the teams sent off the field because of lightning.
A little after 11 p.m., the teams decided there would be no more football, and it was declared a 43-43 tie, a rare thing in New Mexico prep football, since the rules are explicitly designed to have a winner and a loser in every game.
鈥�&驳迟; Highland 41, Del Norte 14
At Milne, Highland (2-0) had its way with the Knights (0-2). Curtis Ryan caught three touchdown passes for the Hornets and had over 100 yards rushing.
Jorge Solano threw two touchdown passes and scored on a rushing TD. Will Anchondo ran for a score and threw for another.

鈥�&驳迟; Rio Rancho 48, Los Lunas 20
Whatever offensive issues the Rio Rancho Rams were having last week, those were largely ironed out on Friday night.
The Rams, ranked eighth in Class 6A, had success on the ground and in the air as they beat Class 5A鈥檚 third-ranked Los Lunas 48-20.
Rio Rancho (1-1) had just a single touchdown in a Week 1 home loss to Las Cruces.
The Rams fell into an early 7-0 hole after muffing a punt deep in its own end. On the next play, Los Lunas quarterback Luke Cieremans tossed a 20-yard scoring pass to Tayson Gaxiola.
Rio Rancho answered with an 83-yard scoring drive, capped by Micah Takahashi鈥檚 17-yard touchdown pass on third and goal to Gilly Terrazas.
鈥�&驳迟; Bernalillo 12, Albuquerque Academy 7
As legend has it, a former player coined the term 鈥淕oon Squad鈥� to define the gritty mentality of Bernalillo football program under coach John Cobos shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic.
On Friday night, the legend of the 鈥淕oon Squad鈥� lived on, delivering when the Spartans (1-1) needed it most. With Albuquerque Academy (1-1) perhaps one first down away from running out the clock, junior linebacker Teo Martinez y Marr scooped up a Chargers fumble and raced some 45 yards for a touchdown to give Bernalillo a dramatic 12-7 victory on its home field.
鈥淪o that鈥檚 kind of what our identity is,鈥� Cobos said of the moniker, which can be found on the side of the hats worn by the coaching staff. 鈥淚t's our defense. It's what we pride ourselves on.
鈥�&驳迟; Cleveland 40, Chatfield, Colo. 20
Jacari Smith and Joaquin Manning aren鈥檛 quite ready to petition Cleveland coach Robert Garza for more opportunities near the end zone.
But the two defensive linemen certainly didn鈥檛 hurt their chances after Friday. If anything, they might have improved their resumes with a couple of thicc 6s.
Smith scored on a pick-6 in the end zone, while Manning provided a rushing touchdown in the Storm鈥檚 40-20 win over Chatfield (Colorado).
鈥淟inemen are definitely underrated (athletes),鈥� Manning said. 鈥淓specially me and Jacari. We might be the most underrated. (We鈥檙e) faster, stronger.鈥�

At Nusenda Community Stadium, Hawks quarterback Jude Herrera had another excellent night throwing the ball, finishing with over 250 yards as 近距离内射合集 Visa (2-0) beat the Cougars (0-2) in a game between the rivals that was a rare nondistrict contest.
Aiden Gonzales had a pick-6 for 近距离内射合集 Vista鈥檚 defense, which also registered a safety on a blocked punt.
Cibola Terry Maes was injured in this game.
鈥�&驳迟; Palmer Ridge, Colo. 29, La Cueva 10
In Monument, Colo., the Palmer Ridge Bears scored the game鈥檚 first 22 points and held off La Cueva (1-1).
鈥�&驳迟; Valencia 6, Grants 2
In Grants, the Jaguars surrendered an early safety, but they had the only touchdown of the game, a short, fourth-quarter touchdown pass from Santino Mares to Daniel Tafoya in the second quarter, and the Jaguars鈥� defense took care of the rest in a road win for Valencia (2-0).
鈥�&驳迟; St. Michael鈥檚 3, Santa Fe 0
St. Michael鈥檚 (2-0) kicked a field goal in overtime, a 23-yard boot that barely cleared the crossbar, to defeat Santa Fe 3-0 at Ivan Head Stadium. The Horsemen ran their winning streak to 35 games, now officially the second-longest win streak in the state鈥檚 history.
鈥�&驳迟; Organ Mountain 54, Mayfield 15
At the Field of Dreams, the Knights (2-0) continued their impressive start, although this game was marred by a large brawl.
There were numerous Mayfield ejections; it was not immediately known how many Knights were ejected. Video of the incident shows several dozen Trojans leaving the sideline, which warrants an automatic ejection. The same video shows the large majority of the players for the Knights remaining on their sideline.
鈥�&驳迟; Holtville, Calif. 66, St. Pius 31
In Holtville, Calif., the Vikings pulled away from the Sartans in this rare meeting between teams from New Mexico and California.
St. Pius was as close as 24-18 in this contest, but Holtville then scored the next 20 points.
鈥�&驳迟; Sandia 50, Manzano 0
At Wilson Stadium, the Matadors, for the second straight week, got a lot of their offensive talent involved. There were seven touchdowns to seven different players in the win for Sandia (2-0).
Quarterback Jahleel Lewis ran for a score and threw for a TD.
鈥�&驳迟; Hobbs 28, Artesia 27
At Watson Memorial Stadium in Hobbs, the Bulldogs scored in the game鈥檚 final minute, but were stopped on a 2-point conversion try and the Eagles (1-1) held off the Bulldogs (0-2).
Hobbs scored with 40 seconds to go to lead 28-27 on a scoring pass from Junior Medrano to Zaylyn Sanders.
Artesia scored with 4 seconds to go and tried to run it in for the game-winning conversion.
Gavin McPherson made the game-winning tackle for Hobbs.
鈥�&驳迟; Moriarty 34, Pojoaque Valley 8
In Moriarty, Royce Dennison rushed for 179 yards and three touchdowns as the Pintos (2-0) rolled past the Elks in their home opener. Dennison also intercepted two passes in the victory.
Mario Romero added two touchdown runs for Moriarty.
