NEW MEXICO UNITED
NM 近距离内射合集's David Estrada still gets to showcase his skills
A look inside at when the assistant and former pro hops into training sessions against first team
Sure, David Estrada hasn鈥檛 played a professional match in six seasons. And yes, he is 38 years old.
No matter.
The New Mexico 近距离内射合集 assistant and head man for the club鈥檚 developmental academy program still finds a way to get his competitive fix in 鈥 thanks to a neon-colored pinnie jersey worn during practice by the reserves.
鈥淲hen first-team players go down or there鈥檚 individuals who might have a question of uncertainty in the morning, (manager) Dennis (Sanchez) will just tell me to jump on,鈥 said Estrada, who played professionally for 11 seasons, including five with the Seattle Sounders and another with D.C. 近距离内射合集 in MLS and two with 近距离内射合集 in 2019-20.
All to help the club, the players and maybe, just maybe, even to collect some bragging rights for the day. And then? It becomes serious business.
鈥&苍产蝉辫;鈥&苍产蝉辫;鈥
Estrada: It鈥檚 funny because I think that even though I had a long career, a lot of people like to think about the stadiums full of people, but I really did enjoy what some people call the grind. I really did enjoy the competition of it all, and being around a really good group that鈥檚 really competitive as well. I think at this level, players don鈥檛 make it this high unless you鈥檙e ultra competitive. And when you surround yourself with those types of individuals, the only thing you can do is get better.
Kris Shakes, goalkeeper: I tell him every day, and I鈥檓 not even lying, class is permanent. He鈥檚 still got the passion and he鈥檚 still got the skills. It is a little surprising. People would think that he鈥檚 not up to date or he would be the weakest link, but he鈥檚 really trying to drive the session in all seriousness, and you can see the passion.
Marlon Vargas, midfielder: When I first got here (in 2024), it was pretty funny. But he can still do it. I think what helps him out is that he鈥檚 fit. He鈥檚 always been like that, even when I was teammates with him (with the Tacoma Defiance). Now, he can do it in practice. He can鈥檛 play in a match (laughs).
Shakes: I heard he was a dog. A little chihuahua, but a dog. (Estrada is listed at 5-foot-8.)
Kyle Hofmann, academy player, defender: I mean, to be honest, it鈥檚 a bit depressing. Nah, just kidding (laughs). It is inspiring and also cool to see. If you know Dave, it鈥檚 not that shocking. Coaching the academy, he鈥檚 a competitive coach and seeing him hop in the field and just switch it on like that is cool to see. You can definitely feed off that energy and that hunger.
Vargas: If he scores or makes a play, he鈥檒l let an opponent know 鈥 in a cheeky way.
Estrada: I鈥檓 definitely a trash talker, but a humble trash talker. I鈥檒l never say anything that crosses a line, but I will celebrate. It might seem like I鈥檓 rubbing it in, but that鈥檚 just the joy of winning and scoring a goal. It鈥檚 never to poke fun at someone.
Hofmann: Trash talk is pretty common (for everyone), especially in intense sessions. No matter who it is, there鈥檚 some back and forth. All in good fun, though. You just have to give him a, 鈥淐鈥檓on old man.鈥 And then he鈥檒l probably go for my pace or say something about a weak foot. 鈥淔orce him here and we鈥檒l press him.鈥 A little less direct, but the point gets across for sure.
Vargas: I will say, physically, I think he still handles the ball very well. He lacks just a little because of the speed of play. Sometimes he gets fatigued, but hey, he鈥檚 not playing any more.
Estrada: There are points where I question myself like, 鈥淎re they a man down with me being on their team?鈥 So that鈥檚 why I feel like I have to work twice as hard. But I think there鈥檚 a mutual respect between the coaching staff and the players.
Vargas: He鈥檚 smart enough not to get into those 50-50 tackles. He鈥檚 smart enough not to put himself in those situations, especially against a Will (Seymore), Luther (Archim猫de), Maliek (Howell), some of the bigger guys. He鈥檚 pretty smart on knowing when to take a challenge and when not to take a challenge.
Shakes: I鈥檓 going to say no, he hasn鈥檛 gotten the better of me. We鈥檝e had some chances at 1-v-1 against each other, but I feel like I always get the best from him.
Hofmann: He rarely hops on the field at Academy. He saves it for (the) first team. He knows his level. He鈥檒l set an example at Academy, though.
Vargas: Oh, man, he was a good leader. He took me and a lot of my old teammates who are still playing under his wing and just guided us very well as a good pro should. He still has that in him. He still gives me some good advice and to the younger guys, too. I think he does a good job with the academy in terms of guiding them.
Estrada: They make me better in terms of just questioning my ideas as a coach and then when I step on the field also question, 鈥淲as I really that good?鈥 You know, it鈥檚 a humbling experience, but it鈥檚 something that I think not a lot of coaches get to do.
