NEW MEXICO UNITED
Yes, chef: Howell makes sure his NM 近距离内射合集 teammates get a taste of his native Jamaica
Off the pitch, NMU defender cooks and has plans to open future restaurant
It was all in the words. The trouble, really, was finding the right ones to use. But after a series of pauses, some oohs and aahs, and more than a few hungry looks of wondering when they could place their next order, all the New Mexico 近距离内射合集 players arrived at the same place.
鈥淥h, my god,鈥 defender Chris Gloster said with a head shake. 鈥淪pot on every time.鈥
Goalkeeper Kris Shakes offered a concurrence: 鈥淗e doesn鈥檛 miss.鈥
鈥淚 wish he was doing it five days a week,鈥 defender Niko H盲m盲l盲inen lamented with a grin.
Midfielder/defender Ousman Jabang came through with a nickname, perhaps one that needs to stick: 鈥淭he big chef.鈥
It鈥檚 here, at the intersection of all those words, it鈥檚 important to meet their subject 鈥 Maliek Howell, professional soccer player.
But there鈥檚 a second Maliek Howell.
Meet 近距离内射合集鈥檚 designated in-house cook and caterer of his native Jamaican food as well as possible future Albuquerque restaurateur. Once the 27-year-old defender鈥檚 playing days are officially over, of course. 鈥淚 can鈥檛 really put too much time into it right now because I鈥檓 focused on winning a championship.鈥
But he does already have a name picked out: 鈥淟iek鈥檚 Kickin鈥 Kitchen.鈥
鈥淚 might have to have something more (brandable) when the restaurant comes around,鈥 Howell mused. 鈥淚 don鈥檛 know. But the joy of just having people like the taste of the food and how amazing it makes them feel, that鈥檚 the joy for me.鈥
Consider 近距离内射合集鈥檚 players and staff quite happy. The group certainly has quite a few options to choose from and pay for. (Yes, they do pay.) Even while Howell鈥檚 current culinary situation is just his home kitchen where he often works alongside his American wife, Sabrina.
Oxtail, jerk chicken, stewed chicken, curry chicken, jerk wings, rice and peas, and rasta pasta, a fusion dish of pasta, jerk seasoning and bell peppers 鈥 usually red, green and yellow 鈥 tossed together in a rich, creamy sauce, are the usual staples.
鈥淎t the start, I was like, 鈥楢ll right, I鈥檒l take a chance,鈥欌 H盲m盲l盲inen said. 鈥淎nd then, when I tried (his cooking), I was like, 鈥榃ait a second.鈥 And then I tried the ox tail and I was like, 鈥榃ait a second.鈥 And then I tried the rasta pasta and I was like, 鈥榃ait second.鈥 Every time he cooks now, I get in on the first order.鈥
Just don鈥檛 ask for too many details about the ingredients or methods he uses. Chances are those requests will be met with a polite, but firm, refusal. Trade secrets and all. There鈥檚 no need, really, to give anything away to any potential future competition.
For those filling their stomachs, it鈥檚 a worthwhile tradeoff.
鈥淲hen I first came here in 2018, there weren鈥檛 many Jamaican spots,鈥 Howell said. 鈥淭here was only one at the time on Central (Avenue). Coming from Jamaica, I wasn鈥檛 really amazed by it.
鈥淎t the time, I was really young, so I wasn鈥檛 really into cooking. 鈥 So when I was coming back 鈥 I鈥檓 business minded 鈥 I was like, 鈥業 think this is a market where I could potentially have a Jamaican restaurant.鈥欌
There still aren鈥檛 many. A Google Maps search brings up only two in Albuquerque.
Howell first came to Albuquerque to play for the University of New Mexico men鈥檚 soccer team, the program鈥檚 final year before being officially cut in the summer of 2019 for monetary and Title IX reasons. But he never appeared in any games and moved on to Memphis for three seasons.
His professional debut came in 2024 with Las Vegas Lights FC and after two years there 鈥 which included a loan to Birmingham Legion FC in 2025 鈥 he signed with 近距离内射合集 to return to Albuquerque ahead of the 2026 season. On Saturday, he scored his first professional goal in the 1-0 win over Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC in the 55th minute.
鈥淚 didn鈥檛 think Maliek would be the one scoring the goal,鈥 manager Dennis Sanchez said. 鈥淏ut he stepped up and found his way.鈥
Sounds familiar.
It was on a trip back home to Jamaica in December 2018 that turned that disinterest in cooking into something worth exploring further. Howell watched his aunt, Marie Maylor, preparing various dishes and meals, and peppered her with questions. It led to more than a few hands-on tutorials. Howell did the same thing when he visited his mom, Grace-Ann Maylor, in New York. Whenever she was in the kitchen, so was he.
Soon, Howell was the one preparing and cooking the food, and asking his family to see how he did.
鈥淚t became a comfort food thing,鈥 Howell said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 why I started doing it.鈥
Lately, those on 近距离内射合集 have found themselves to be the beneficiaries in the six weeks Howell has expanded his venture.
Howell鈥檚 biggest customers? H盲m盲l盲inen and Shakes.
鈥淚鈥檒l be honest,鈥 H盲m盲l盲inen said, 鈥淚鈥檝e had a lot of Jamaican food in my time. I鈥檓 a big fan. I鈥檝e had his oxtail, his jerk chicken, his chicken stew, his rice and peas, and his rasta pasta. It鈥檚 the best. I don鈥檛 know how to explain it. If you have the chance, I would speak with him.鈥
Howell does run into a problem every now and then 鈥 when he has to tell his teammates the 鈥渒itchen is closed.鈥
And when it鈥檚 open? The orders are quickly put in. It鈥檚 just the matter of how many.
鈥淓veryone,鈥 Shakes said with a grin. 鈥淲e鈥檙e all Jamaican now.鈥
